Scott McTominay has been in fine form for Napoli – while the former Manchester United midfielder has been keeping a close eye on his old club’s resurgence under Michael Carrick.

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has expressed his joy at the current transformation at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick’s stewardship – and reckons he saw it coming. The ex-midfielder served as first-team coach during McTominay’s time with the Red Devils.

Carrick has now stepped up as head coach until the campaign concludes, with his opening two matches in the dugout restoring optimism at the club. A 2-0 triumph over neighbours Manchester City was backed up by a 3-2 away success against table-toppers Arsenal.

Those consecutive victories have propelled United into fourth spot in the Premier League table. That’s a position they’ll be determined to maintain through to the season’s end.

Discussing United, during a Napoli press conference, McTominay said: “Michael Carrick is such a great guy. I’ve got so much love and respect for him.

“Those two results vs Man City and Arsenal have been amazing, especially for me to watch. So I’m very, very proud of all the players and long may it continue.”

McTominay added: “It doesn’t surprise me. I wish him [Carrick] all the best. The first matches have been great. Let’s hope it continues like that.”

The remarks reveal just how keenly the Scotland international monitors his former side and arrive mere days after the club were urged to pursue his return to Old Trafford by their ex-striker Giuseppe Rossi. “It’s all up to the coach,” he said. “I feel that’s all up in the air.

“You can’t really go out and start buying players if you don’t know the coaching situation. I always say McTominay because he would actually be a good player for Manchester United at this moment.”

McTominay departed United during the summer of 2024, sealing a £25million move to Serie A outfit Napoli. He has subsequently flourished, receiving widespread acclaim for his displays in Italy.

Such was his contribution last campaign in helping the club clinch the Serie A crown, he was positioned at number 18 in the running for the 2025 Ballon d’Or. He also won Serie A’s Player of the Year award.

This season, he has featured in 31 matches in all competitions, netting nine goals while adding a further four assists. Four of those have come in seven Champions League outings.
