Several top US news outlets conducted separate polls, and all show that President Donald Trump has the lowest approval rating of any president in the first 100 days of office in the past 80 years. However, he still beats Democrats in Congress in terms of trust to manage the country’s most pressing issues.
The ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll reveals that 39 per cent of respondents approve of how Trump is managing his job as president. That is 6 per cent down from February, while 55 per cent said they disapprove.
“Most presidents enjoy a honeymoon during their first months in office, only to see their ratings decline later in the first year. Trump may be an exception,” the Washington Post wrote. Trump also had a poor 100-day approval rating in 2017, when only 42 per cent of people surveyed by the same pollsters agreed he was doing a good job.
Trump’s policies might cause a recession
“Perhaps most threatening to Trump, given his promise of an economic turnaround, is the extent of negative views on the economy,” said ABC. “Seventy-two per cent said they think it’s very or somewhat likely that his economic policies will cause a recession in the short term.”
Also, 73 per cent believe the economy is in poor shape, while 53 per cent say it’s worsened since Trump took office and 41 per cent said their personal finances have gotten worse, which as many as those who said so about former President Joe Biden last year.
Trump campaigned on the promise to curb rising prices, but 62 per cent said they are increasing, while 71 per cent say inflation is linked to his tariffs strategy.
Most Americans don’t seem to trust him
While the White House keep asking Americans to “trust Trump is doing the right thing and laying the foundation for the longer term,” only 31 per cent in the poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates with fieldwork by Ipsos, accepted Trump’s argument.
In regards to his exertion of presidential powers, 65 per cent say Trump’s administration is trying to avoid complying with federal court orders, 62 per cent don’t believe his government respects the rule of law, and 64 per cent say he’s gone too far.
When asked about his measures against higher education centres, 70 per cent opposed his administration’s increasing role in how private universities are run, 66 per cent were against closing the Department of Education, and 67 per cent opposed ending birthright citizenship.
CNN also conducted a poll
A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS also concluded that, “Trump’s 41 per cent approval rating is the lowest for any newly elected president at 100 days, dating back at least to Dwight Eisenhower – including Trump’s first term.”
“The poll finds the president underwater and sinking across nearly all major issues he’s sought to address during his time in office, with the public’s confidence in his ability to handle those issues also on the decline,” CNN wrote.
