    Force of Nature

    6pm, ITV1

This natural history series has an appropriately polemical edge – its exploration of various natural habitats is filtered through the increasing difficulties faced by animals hoping to thrive in them. It focuses on coastal regions in this episode, as unexpected extreme weather destroys flamingo colonies and ruins the anemone home of clownfish. It’s impressive but sobering, too, as an insight into the chaos wrought by humans. Phil Harrison

    Van Der Valk

    8pm, ITV1

So far, series four of the Amsterdam cop reboot has featured two gangland murders and a car bombing (even if the biggest crime remains the wishy-washy version of the classic theme tune). Marc Warren’s prickly Piet is determined to collar the culprit, though it will mean teaming up with a formidable criminal matriarch. Graeme Virtue

Richard E Grant’s Very Modern Odyssey

The budget doesn’t compare to that enjoyed by Christopher Nolan but if you haven’t heard enough hot takes on Homer’s epic this summer, Richard E Grant’s road trip is one of the better ones. This time, he’s in Sicily where he explores the myth of Cyclops and performs, with endearingly luvvy-ish gusto, in an amphitheatre. PH

    NYO at the Proms

    8pm, BBC Four

Conducted by Thomas Adès, the 150-strong National Youth Orchestra will play a trilogy of pieces centring on the underworld: Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz No 1, based on Nikolaus Lenau’s Faust poem; Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique; and Part II of Adès’s own ballet score Dante: Purgatorio. Petroc Trelawny is your host. Priya Elan

    The Rapture

    9pm, BBC One

This chaotic but enjoyably eccentric drama concludes. Bethany is on the run and her drawings of her visions are becoming more apocalyptic still. With her professionalism being called into question, is Gabs going to risk everything to help her? The walls are closing in around both of them, so she might not have much choice. PH

    The Piano

    9pm, Channel 4

Claudia Winkleman and Mika arrive at Manchester Piccadilly, where their guest expert is German pianist Alice Sara Ott. Excelling on the concourse are a young composer whose piece is based on just two notes, a seven-year-old who has charm to match startling ability, and a musician who has spent time away from their most beloved instrument, but now makes a triumphant, tear-inducing comeback. Jack Seale

    Film choice

If Jan de Bont’s 1994 action thriller didn’t propel Keanu Reeves to stardom (Point Break arguably did that in 1991), it was his biggest box-office hit to date – and it was most definitely a breakthrough moment for Sandra Bullock. She is her co-star’s equal as a passenger who has to take the steering wheel of an LA bus primed to explode if it goes under 50mph. Reeves has the more superficially heroic role as a police bomb disposal officer, but both have their moments in a terrifically tense series of freeway set-pieces, while Dennis Hopper is reliably unhinged as their foe.
