Nothing like getting a new WR on your stubborn cat
Much like human intimacy, sometimes pet ownership can feel like taking turns lovingly annoying each other. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Gulliver the cat’s YouTube channel, where his owner likes to chronicle his ongoing struggle to get Gulliver to leave his gaming chair.
Obviously, it’s all in good fun. The owner likes to lightly play with Gulliver directly with his hands, prompting Gulliver to fight back. In the videos, the owner’s hand becomes almost like a Smash Bros. boss battle for Gulliver. The exchanges never seem to last more than a minute or so, but the owner’s speedrun timer still manages to cram in multiple segments that reference how Gulliver reacts to the stimulus.
As any serious speedrunner would do, the owner attempts different types of tactics to optimize his run. One speedrun has the owner successfully getting Gulliver to leave the chair by offering a treat. There’s also been a “no damage” speedrun where he attempts to make Gulliver leave with less aggressive tactics, like not touching the tabby as much as possible.
Gulliver, it should be said, appears to lead a nice life. The channel is full of videos showing the owner taking the pink-nosed feline out for walks or lying on the grass. The owner has also made speedrun categories that are inherently much nicer than low-key rage baiting his cat, like the one where he sees how many pets Gulliver might tolerate. Without spoiling anything in that video, I’ll say that the videos display just how plugged-in Gulliver’s owner is to the world of speedrunning. Some of these jokes will only make sense if you’re familiar with the phrase, “but first, we need to talk about parallel universes.“
Most of the videos end with the owner doing a fist bump in the air, as Gulliver concedes the seating. But sometimes, the owner is thwarted. And yet, seeing (FAILED WR) in the YouTube title just makes things more entertaining.
