Wolves’ 2-0 win against Aston Villa saw fans clash, Konsa confronts, Emery snubs a handshake, and the referee was mocked by a poo chant.

Bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers got just their second win of the season after beating 3rd Aston Villa with a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from João Gomes (61′) and Rodrigo Gomes (90’+8′). It also saw them avoid a record-low points total, surpassing Derby County’s record.

Emery mentioned Villa’s dip, saying that a month ago, he dreamed of the title, but instead, they’re fighting for top five.

Aston Villa let themselves down tonight. Forget the league table – their performances in recent weeks have been in need of drastic improvement if they are to finish in the top five this season. Only one team had something riding on this match, and it wasn’t Wolves.#AVFC pic.twitter.com/lEkXxFncrk

His side’s poor form continues, having won just three of their past 10 Premier League games as they cling on to third in the Premier League.

Post-match drama saw Villa boss Unai Emery refuse to shake hands with Wolves boss Rob Edwards, instead he walked straight down the tunnel. Ezri Konsa could be seen taking issue with angry Villa fans.

Referee Craig Pawson also had to leave the pitch for a toilet break with around 30 minutes of the game remaining, leading Wolves fans cheekily chanting “he’s had a shit”.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to Sky Sports: “Congratulations to all of the players for the fantastic season we are having. Fantastic first half, we dominated. We created chances and did not concede early on. We deserved more in the first half.

“In the second half they were winning more balls and they got into our box. When they scored, it was more and more difficult for us. For me, I think we lost more time than seven minutes.”

On chances: “We had one chance with Amadou Onana and we did not score. But what a fantastic season we are having. We were tired and played open. But they have good players. After their goal, they were much more competitive.

“Now is the moment to be together and to understand how we are where we are. Today we did not achieve what we needed but it is still in our hands to get into a top position.”

Emery on looking for more from the players: “I was trying to push and get them to be positive. We were trying to dominate the match and not break our rhythm. We needed to think about what we were doing. We kept going and that is how we finished the game. We have still had a very good season and have good confidence that is the message.”

On players out with injury: “We have good players, of course there are injuries and we know that can happen. But with the players we have, we are here. We must continue to move forward.”

A Sky Sports interviewer said to Emery: “After their second goal, you headed straight down the tunnel at the end. Was that just frustration on your part?”

Emery replied: “No, the match was finished…”.

Rob Edwards was asked in his post-match press conference if he had bumped into the Aston Villa boss after the game. Per The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell, Edwards said:

“Not yet, I get it. The two games we won both managers had disappeared. They probably think they can turn up and win given how the season has gone! I’ve got a lot of respect for Unai, I think he’s brilliant, so it’s fine.”

Earlier in the season, Emery failed to shake hands with Mikel Arteta following a 4-1 defeat. Emery said, “I can’t wait forever. It was cold.”

Emery speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “We are doing a fantastic season. We are performing fantastic overall and being consistent. Today we lost, but in the first half we played fantastically. We dominated, created chances.

“Second half we started poor. They got at our box but didn’t’ create much. After they scored, the match changes. They stopped the rhythm of the game. We deserved more than seven minutes [added on] to play].

“We continue working, being positive, we are motivated for the Premier League because the position we are in is fantastic. It’s above our expectation from before the season. Now is the moment to be together and remind ourselves where we are.

“We lost, but they are a good team with good players. Congratulations to Wolves, the coach and the players.

“They [Manchester United and Chelsea] are favourites [for Champions League] because of the strength they have. We are there at the moment, but normally they are favourites.”

Aston Villa striker Morgan Rogers speaking to Sky Sports: “Disappointing. We didn’t do anywhere near enough to create chances and score goals. We controlled the game in parts, it was not all doom and gloom. But we did not create enough chances.”

On the start of the game: “They are at home and are a good team, despite their position. They grew into the game and had their moments. In the first half we managed them as well as we could, but they had a spell on top. We did not do enough.”

On the pressure on Villa: “It does weigh on us but it shouldn’t. We deserve to be here and we should not forget that. Our run lately has not been as good as usual but that is the battle of the Premier League. We are going to get back to our good run of wins.”

On injuries in the team: “There are not excuses. We have players who are fit. We strive to win every game but we are still third in the table. This is where we want to be.”

On the mood in changing room: “We set our standards high and we have the ability to win every game. Obviously that is not realistic but we are playing good football as a whole and there is nothing to worry about.”

On their upcoming fixtures: “They are the games you want to play and with so much on the line, we need to show why we deserve to be where we are.”

Wolves boss Rob Edwards speaking to Sky Sports: “Really proud, that’s why I came here, nights like that, to connect with the supporters like that. I know we are in a difficult position but I love football tonight like that, it’s brilliant.

“We were really committed, we didn’t get everything right in the first half, but Villa are good and clever, they can manipulate you and make it difficult to press.

“Second half was excellent. We really grew into the game and were really good against a brilliant team. You have to be good to get a result against them.”

On the changes he made at half-time: “We pressed slightly differently [in the second half] asked Adam to do the two centre-backs, and JJ and Mane on the two pivots, because it was difficult to get pressure on the two centre-backs and Onan and Luiz.

“We thought there would be lots of opportunities for us on transition, there were moments we didn’t take advantage of in the first half. I’m please we were ruthless when we needed to be.”

Edwards speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Elation, relief! I know how big a game this is for us and our supporters. It’s a Midlands derby and we take pride in it. When the final goal went in it was the final nail in the coffin and I could enjoy the final 20 seconds.

“Villa are such a good team with loads of individual talent and quality, so you have to do your job. In transitional moments we needed to be clean, go for it or stay behind.

“In defence there was a great desire to keep the ball out of the net.”

On winning the derby despite their position in the table: “It’s special, really special. It’s been hanging over our heads. It’s not something I’ve focused on. To do it in this game, with everyone watching, it was important, it keeps us moving in the right direction.

On his touchline celebration for the second goal: “The old calf was close to going, I’m not at top speed. I was conscious of not falling over! My family was over in that corner, so it was nice to have that moment with them. I lost myself a bit there.”

Edwards speaking to Sky Sports: “Defending was amazing, there was desire to block and defend our goal with our lives. You need that not just in a derby, but all the time.

“We have been more solid – the stats over the last 15 games, we are right up there for defensive work. But the odd defensive mistake, you get punished at this level.

“We’re improving, that’s all we can do. We’ll keep our heads down and stay grounded. We will show spirit and fight and keep picking up as many points a we can.”

On the second half performance of Jackson Tchatchoua: “He’s a really honest guy, he gives everything. Because he’s so quick there’s an expectation he beats a man and puts a cross in. I want him to be brave and positive and on the front foot. His defensive works was excellent as well. I always want people to stick by the lads and keep backing them. Even if he makes a mistake, keep backing him.

Wolves keeper Jose Sa speaking to Sky Sports: “It was a very good performance from every single player. Villa did well but our fans deserve this win. It means a lot to them because it is a derby. It was great to give them this win tonight.”

On character as a team: “We have a lot of strong character and we will keep fighting game by game and see what happens. From the whole of the team, we defended and attacked well. A clean sheet is good for everyone. We will keep fighting.”

On their form earlier in the season: “Even today I have said we should have played like this from the beginning! But we will keep fighting.”

Wolves’ Adam Armstrong speaking to Sky Sports: “It has been brilliant coming into this side. I knew the circumstances before I came in and I can’t thank the team enough for the praise that I have been given.

“Performances like that are why we play football. We know where we are in the league but a game like that in a derby, it is massive.”

On the first goal: “It was a pass from me! I took a touch down and luckily [João] Gomes was there to finish it off. We knew we would get chances and the boys were outstanding in the second half too.”

On their upcoming fixtures: “We have to take every game as it comes and keep putting in performances. We will work hard every week.”

On Rob Edwards: “He is brilliant and we work hard as a team. A night like tonight is amazing.”

Here’s how fans reacted after Wolves’ 2-0 win against Aston Villa saw fans clash, Konsa confronts, Emery snubs a handshake, and the referee was mocked by a poo chant…

@capewell_oliver: Most people say it’s a dislikesble squad and they can’t wait to see the back of them all but after a performance like today with the effort shown I can’t help but love them all. Such a shame it’s too little too late because this team is definitely capable imo #wwfc

@Dwarfio: It’s been an awful season to endure, but moments like last night remind you why you keep coming back for more #wwfc

@RK13_4: Been a little bemused by some of the selections/ set up in recent weeks. Tonight was spot on, tactically very good, the press good and restricted them to very little. Fair play RE

@WolvesMatty: Loved the atmosphere. From singing about Moutinho, Jimenez, Jota and Neves, to the banter with the Villa fans, to the celebrations of the two goals. This is what Molineux is capable of. All we want to see is that same passion, quality and strive to improve in return #wwfc

@ScottThoma88074: Great 3 points & good performance. Nice to win against WM rivals. Only our 2nd victory this season. No longer the worst Premier League team in history. We may still be going down but hopefully it happens by fighting. UTW 🧡🖤🐺

@RattyAVFC: Ezri Konsa was nothing more than a disgrace at the end of that game. Get Lindelof in, drop him, who the hell does he think he is, pipe down, you were shit, you lost to bottom of the league, own it. How dare you

@CharlieUTV1: Anyone having a go at Konsa moaning at the fans can fuck right off. How anyone can have a go at him of all people tonight is beyond me. Have we been good enough recently? Not at all, but don’t take it out on the players who have obviously been massively overachieving this season

@AvfcU: Fans who pay their money travelling around the country have the right to show their displeasure at that result this evening. I love Konsa (my son shares his name) but as captain he should be offering an apology and heading down the tunnel. He’s way off it this evening

@TheVillaHome: Absolutely spineless last night IMO. To go to Molineux and get bullied by the bottom of the league is embarrassing. 61% possession means nothing when there’s zero fight and no desire to actually win the second ball. Champions League hopes? Not with that lack of heart. If we’re not really careful the season will derail at a rapid rate of knots with more performances like last nights. Keep saying it of late, but NEED a reaction on Wednesday, and need some changes in that starting XI

@VillaViews_: It’s been easy to be a Villa fan for months – winning games, scoring great goals, climbing the table. Now, with injuries to key players, a poor run and some abject performances, is the hard bit. Time to stick together. Up the Villa. #avfc
