John Mulaney is an Emmy-winning comedian, writer and actor best known for his sharp stand-up specials and work on Saturday Night Live. He first gained recognition as a writer on the sketch series before becoming a major comedy star with specials like New in Town and Kid Gorgeous.

In recent years, his personal life has also made headlines, including his relationship and marriage to Olivia Munn. The couple, who began dating in 2021, now share two children—son Malcolm and daughter Méi June—and tied the knot in July 2024.

From his early comedy roots to his career highs and personal milestones, here’s everything to know about John below.

He’s From Chicago

John was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 26, 1982, to Ellen, a professor at Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law, and Charles “Chip” Mulaney Jr., a lawyer.

He attended St. Ignatius College Prep before going on to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he graduated in 2004. He has remained connected to the school over the years, including participating in a fundraiser for its improv society in 2019.

He Got His Start on Saturday Night Live

John began his career as a writer on Saturday Night Live from 2008 to 2013, where he helped create some of the show’s most memorable sketches, including the fan-favorite Stefon character with Bill Hader. During his time on the writing staff, he earned multiple Emmy nominations for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series.

He was originally invited to audition for the show in 2008—alongside comedians like Donald Glover and Ellie Kemper—which ultimately led to his hiring as a writer. After leaving the show, John returned as a host multiple times beginning in 2018 and has since become a frequent guest host, eventually joining SNL’s Five-Timers Club.

He’s an Emmy Winner

While working on the Saturday Night Live writing team for many years, he earned several Emmy Awards. John took home a trophy for his work on Justin Timberlake‘s hilarious opening monologue in 2011, and has also been honored with a slew of nominations. He later won additional Emmys for his stand-up specials, including John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City (2018) and Baby J (2023), both recognized for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.

Beyond his writing success, John built a major following as a stand-up comic with specials like The Comeback Kid and Baby J, as well as earlier Comedy Central projects. He has also created and starred in his own sitcom, Mulaney, which premiered on Fox in 2014. Unfortunately, the series ran for just a season and was cancelled after 13 episodes — but John has no hard feelings about it. “I think it was a really funny show. And I think it had tons of funny jokes,” he said of Mulaney in a 2018 interview. “That’s not disagreeing with anyone who didn’t like it, but I think at the time I didn’t want to admit, ‘I thought it was good, guys. I wouldn’t have put it out there if I didn’t.”

He Has Been Open About His Personal Struggles

John has been candid about his struggles with substance use, including in a 2024 interview with David Letterman on Netflix’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. During the conversation, he spoke honestly about going through rehab, describing the physical and emotional challenges of detox and recovery.

He also reflected on how that period of his life influenced his stand-up, particularly his special Baby J, which turned his experiences with addiction, intervention and sobriety into deeply personal material.

He Is Married to Olivia Munn & Has Two Kids

John is married to actress Olivia Munn. The couple, who began dating in 2021, share two children: their son Malcolm, born in November 2021, and their daughter Méi June, who was born via surrogate in September 2024.
