Starting a business is a dream for many, but it requires training, guidance, and an initial outlay. In Spain, various financial support programmes are available for entrepreneurs, with some specifically targeting women to address unique challenges and promote gender equality in business.
According to the GEM España 2023-24 report, there are currently over 650,000 women entrepreneurs in Spain. Below is an overview of key financial aids and programmes designed to support women entrepreneurs.
Tarifa Plana for self-employed workers
Since 2023, Spain offers a reduced social security contribution rate of €80 per month for the first 12 months for self-employed workers, known as the “Tarifa Plana.” In regions like Madrid and Andalusia, this fee is reduced to zero, making it easier for women to start businesses without immediate financial strain.
Programa de Apoyo Empresarial a las Mujeres (PAEM)
Managed by the Instituto de las Mujeres, PAEM provides tailored support for women entrepreneurs, offering guidance, business creation assistance, and help getting financing or guarantees. This programme is ideal for those women facing difficulties getting access necessary capital or needing strategic advice to launch or grow their ventures.
Premio Europeo a las Mujeres Innovadoras
The European Innovation Council’s Women Innovators Prize celebrates women behind groundbreaking innovations. Prizes range from €20,000 to €100,000, recognising and financially supporting women driving existing pioneering businesses across Europe.
Support for obtaining financial guarantees
Women entrepreneurs who need financing can approach regional Sociedades de Garantía Recíproca (SGRs) such as Avalmadrid or Avalis. The Instituto de las Mujeres offers bonuses of up to €800 per project to help cover guarantee costs.
Desafío Mujer Rural
Co-funded by the European Social Fund, this scheme supports women in rural areas by supporting entrepreneurship and innovation. It provides resources to start and consolidate businesses, so to improve competitiveness in rural economies.
Innovatia 8.3
A collaboration between the Instituto de las Mujeres and the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Innovatia 8.3 supports women in academia to launch science-based startups, and offer visibility and resources to turn research into viable businesses.
Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE)
Supported by the US Embassy, AWE provides a two-month programme with masterclasses, mentoring, and online training through the Arizona State University’s DreamBuilder initiative.
NEOTEC Program
Managed by the CDTI, NEOTEC funds tech-based startups with a 2024 budget of €20 million, reserving at least €5 million for women-led projects, encouraging innovation and technological differentiation.
