Republican Senator Lindsay Graham said he hopes Greta Thunberg can swim as she floats her way to Gaza | Credits: Facebook/Lindsay Graham
Senior U.S. Republican Party Senator Lindsay Graham is likely regretting his unfortunate X post, saying “[I] hope Greta and her friends can swim,” which many on social media have interpreted as a threat.
Several news outlets, including Latin Times, said it appears “Sen. Graham is calling for the sinking of the ship taking Greta Thunberg to Gaza,” while Harici wrote the Republican politician “issues a threat to “Greta and the Gaza freedom flotilla.”
Lindsay’s X post has over 16.7 million views so far and has been met with fierce backlash.
“Why is a 69-year-old U.S. senator joking about the drowning of a 22-year-old Swedish activist?” asked Briand McDonald in response to the post that’s been in the best of cases described as “sick” and “twisted.” “Is this where American politics is now?”
Katya, who has one million followers, was absolutely blunt in her response, which got over 69,000 likes and 4,300 shares: “Shut the f%$ck up you fa&%ot!”
Lindsay, a ‘disgusting POS’
“Did Ladybug Lindsay just ask Israel to bomb another flotilla?” asked GenXGirl in her post, where she adds that Lindsay is a “Disgusting POS.”
The senator’s post also received considerable support from conservatives and Jewish activists, although the vast majority opposed his comment.
Thunberg and 11 other people are on a boat operated by activist group Freedom Flotilla Coalition, headed to the war-torn territory. It departed from the port of Catania in Sicily on Sunday and also intends to raise “international awareness.”
The boat is expected to take seven days to reach its destination, unless it is stopped before. Another vessel attempted the same mission in early May but was stopped from doing so after allegedly being attacked by two drones while sailing off the coast of Malta. The group blamed Israel for the attack.
Israel resumed the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza in mid-May, now distributing it through a private operation rather than the UN.
Greta’s narcissism, at ‘terrifying levels’
British news outlet, The Telegraph, also took a jab of its own at Thunberg on Monday via an article entitled, “Greta Thunberg’s narcissism has escalated to terrifying levels.”
“Bored with saving the planet, Greta Thunberg now wants to save Gaza. Yes, Sweden’s prophetess of doom has a new moral crusade,” the news outlet wrote. “It’s no longer the coming heat death of the Earth that keeps her up at night – it’s Israel’s ‘live-streamed genocide’ in Gaza, as she calls it,” The Telegraph added.
“She and a gaggle of self-righteous pals have set sail for that benighted strip of land. They departed Sicily yesterday, their boat a riot of keffiyehs and Palestine flags. They hope to dock in Gaza in a week’s time,” it said.
The news outlet said Greta intends to “break the Israeli blockade” of Gaza. “We are seeing a systematic starvation of two million people. Every single one of us has a moral obligation to do everything we can to fight for a free Palestine”, said Ms Thunberg.
“Of all the smug stunts of the faux-virtuous activist class, this is surely the most preposterous,” the news outlet said. “The idea that 12 woke fainthearts from Europe might ‘liberate’ Gaza would be funny if it were not so dangerous.”
