US presidential election 2024: How the vote has shifted since the last election

In every state where the majority of votes have been counted, Trump has outperformed his 2020 showing.

The current US President Joe Biden secured the White House in the 2020 election by flipping Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, and Wisconsin to the Democratic party.

Four years later, Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump is declaring victory after winning both Pennsylvania and Georgia.

Pennsylvania, which was part of the once-reliable Democratic stronghold known as the “blue wall” along with Michigan and Wisconsin, was carried by Trump when he first won the White House in 2016 and then flipped back to Democrats in 2020.

Trump also flipped Georgia, which had voted for Democrats four years ago. He has also held onto the closely contested state of North Carolina.

In every state where the majority of votes have been counted, Trump has outperformed his 2020 showing.

Another shift that emerged is among Black and Latino voters, who appeared slightly less likely to support Democratic candidate Kamala Harris than they were to back Biden four years ago.

About 8 in 10 Black voters backed Harris, down from the roughly 9 in 10 who backed Biden.

More than half of Hispanic voters supported Harris, but that was down slightly from the roughly 6 in 10 who backed Biden in 2020. Trump’s support among those groups also appeared to rise slightly compared to 2020.
