US bill gives ‘OK’ to Trump’s bold bid to buy Greenland – When will purchase talks start?

President-elect Donald Trump is gearing up for a controversial move to expand the United States. On Monday, January 13, Republican Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee introduced a bill that could pave the way for Mr Trump’s dream of adding the Arctic island to US territory.

Dubbed the ‘Make Greenland Great Again Act,’ the bill would allow Trump to kickstart negotiations with Denmark on his first day in office, just after noon on Inauguration Day. But hold your horses – it’s not a done deal yet. Congress would still have the power to block any agreement, but they’d need a hefty two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate to make that happen.

Despite Denmark’s firm stance that Greenland is not for sale, there may be room for more talks – particularly about boosting the US military presence in the region. After all, Greenland’s strategic location is key to European and North American security.

But don’t expect the island’s residents to be packing their bags for the US just yet. Many are adamant that they’re not interested in becoming Americans. In fact, some fear losing access to benefits like free healthcare, education, and medicine. Not exactly a tempting offer to join the US, especially if it means giving up those perks.

While most Democratic leaders in Congress have slammed Trump’s idea as a pipe dream, some are leaving the door open for negotiations. Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, for one, has hinted that he might be willing to work with Trump on the matter. So, it seems this saga could be far from over.

Let’s not forget, Trump wouldn’t be the first US president to eye Greenland. Back in the 1860s, President Andrew Johnson floated the idea of buying the island. Even more audacious, President Harry Truman made a secret $100 million gold offer to swap the island for parts of Alaska decades later.

Could Trump finally make the sale happen? Or will the island continue to slip through his fingers?
