A sensational Tyson Fury vs Wladimir Klitschko rematch is being discussed: Is it on?

Tyson Fury could soon be making a sensational comeback, and his next opponent might just be someone he’s already beaten in the past- but he only just beat him. Although Oleksandr Usyk handed Fury his second consecutive loss by unanimous decision before Christmas, the Gypsy King is reportedly raring to go again and getting ready to return to the ring.

Tyson Fury vs Wladimir Klitschko rematch: Is it on?

Fury’s defeat to Usyk was a tough pill to swallow, but the Wythenshaw-born champion is back on it, and ready to go. Now, Eddie Hearn has also stirred the fighting pot with talk of a possible rematch against another heavyweight legend: no other than Ukranian legend Wladimir Klitschko, AKA Dr Steelhammer. Yes, you read that right. The 49-year-old, who famously retired in 2017 after his knockout loss to Anthony Joshua, could be lured back into the ring for another showdown with the toughest chin on the planet. But is it too little, too late for both Fury and Klitschko?

Klitschko, who turns 49 in March, already has a bit of a bone to pick with Fury. Back in 2015, the two were set to fight again after Fury dethroned the then-legendary Klitschko to become world heavyweight champion. But after Fury postponed the rematch due to an ankle injury and a series of controversies – from a failed drug test to reported mental health struggles – the fight never materialised. Klitschko went on to fight Joshua, losing in a thrilling 11th-round knockout.

With Klitschko still in top physical shape, the speculation about a comeback began to swirl late last year, especially after boxing promoter Turki Alalshikh hinted at the possibility of giving the former champ one more shot at glory. And not just any glory – but a chance to become the oldest heavyweight champion in history, a title currently held by George Foreman at 46.

Hearn, ever the hype-man, has given his opinion on the matter, saying: “Wladimir’s bright enough to make his own decision.” He went on to praise Klitschko’s impressive physical condition, pointing out that despite his loss to Joshua, the Ukrainian almost pulled off a shock win. “It wasn’t as if Wladimir looked terrible in that fight,” Hearn said. “He almost beat AJ.”

But the promoter also aired on the side of caution, adding: “It would be difficult for him to come back, but he’s a very strong man. Whatever decision he makes, I’m sure it’ll be the right one for him.”

Could Fury and Klitschko cross paths once one more time? Well, it could make sense. After all, Fury has already taken on some of the biggest names in the sport and he needs a way back after his last defeat, if he wants to continue. But the big question is whether Klitschko’s return is more than just a pipe dream and – if it does happen – whether it will be a serious return, or an ‘exhibition-style’ return. Will Dr Steelhammer be ready and willing to return to the ring? Will Tyson Fury get his boxing career back on track, or should he hang up his gloves?
