‘Greatest Honour of Their Lives’? Eric Trump Thinks Chelsea Invited His Dad to Make Football Great Again.

Eric Trump claims Chelsea players meeting Donald Trump was the ‘greatest honour’ of their lives after Club World Cup win. Fans aren’t convinced. “Listen, he’s the commander-in-chief of the United States of America, and in terms of FIFA, the winning team invited him to the stage because they said it would be the greatest honour of their life if the President of the United States could present the Club World Cup trophy… There’s no-one who’s done more for sport than him…”

There are awkward moments in football, and then there are moments like this: Chelsea, fresh from winning the most glorious friendly tournament in football history – the FIFA Club World Cup – and lifting the trophy… with Donald Trump standing in the middle of it all.

Trump joins Chelsea trophy celebrations – but players look baffled by surprise stage cameo

Trump, flanked by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, appeared on stage at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey after Chelsea’s triumph over Paris Saint-Germain. Cameras rolled, the confetti flew – and there he was, right next to Chelsea captain Reece James, cracking jokes with goalkeeper Robert Sánchez.

As Trump basked in the post-match limelight, FIFA’s Infantino slipped off to the sidelines, while Chelsea’s squad hesitated, seemingly unsure how to celebrate around the unexpected centrepiece of the big night.

Trump’s son: ‘Chelsea begged for it’

Enter Eric Trump, never one to shy away from a headline. In a BBC interview, he insisted that the whole thing was Chelsea’s idea.

“Listen, he’s the commander-in-chief of the United States of America,” Eric said. “And in terms of FIFA, the winning team invited him to the stage because they said it would be the greatest honour of their life if the President of the United States could present the Club World Cup trophy.”

He added, “By the way, I was there, I was watching it. The place went crazy. There’s no-one who’s done more for sport than him and I think in time that will be rewarded, I truly do.”

Rumour has it that several BBC viewers fainted upon hearing his comments – though, to be fair, that remains gloriously unconfirmed.

Boos, baffled looks and a viral Cole Palmer reaction greeted Trump at Club World Cup final

Eric’s version of events didn’t quite match the mood inside the stadium. When Trump took to the stage, the MetLife crowd appeared to let out a chorus of boos rather than cheers – a sound hard to confuse when heard in unison by tens of thousands.

Even Chelsea’s players didn’t seem entirely thrilled. A viral video clip captured midfielder Cole Palmer’s reaction as he clocked Trump next to the trophy: a double-take, furrowed brow, and what can only be described as a silent “What is he doing here?”

So… was Donald Trump really invited on stage by Chelsea as ‘greatest honour of their footballing careers’?

That remains unclear. No Chelsea player or club official has publicly confirmed the claim that the squad requested Trump’s presence – and given how carefully media-trained Premier League players tend to be, you’d think they’d mention it if it were true.

More likely, Trump’s appearance was brokered by FIFA – or at least rubber-stamped by Infantino, who’s no stranger to political optics. With the 2026 World Cup set to take place across the US, Canada and Mexico, it’s not hard to imagine FIFA playing nice with Washington.

Trump’s current term runs until 2028, meaning he’ll still be in the Oval Office when the next World Cup kicks off – a tournament with 11 US host cities. Expect more stage time to come.
