There is growing fear in Norway that a new wave of sabotage attacks may be underway. The country has been left reeling by news of a hefty oil spill at a decommissioned electricity transformer station just outside Oslo. Police are currently investigating a break-in at the site after around 50 to 60 tonnes of transformer oil leaked – sparking immediate suggestions of sabotage.
Statnett, the national power grid operator, was quick to raise the alarm, pointing to foul play as the likely cause. However, officials from the Norwegian police have stressed that no concrete evidence of deliberate tampering has yet been uncovered.
Discovered on Sunday, March 16, the spill has triggered urgent questions about the security of Norway’s vital infrastructure and the potential environmental fallout. With a substantial amount of oil seeping from the disused transformer, authorities have scrambled to assess both the scale of the pollution and how it might affect the surrounding area.
Despite Statnett’s belief that the damage was caused by sabotage, investigators remain cautious.
Environmental experts are already expressing concern about the impact such a large-scale oil spill could have. Whether it was sabotage, negligence or an unlucky slip-up, the messy business in Oslo has left the nation on alert. For now, detectives are digging deeper and everyone else is anxiously awaiting answers.
