Thomas Tuchel will provide England players with a detailed debrief of their time in his first squad as the German’s approach to his new role becomes clearer
Thomas Tuchel has promised to give players their own individual debrief after his first England camp.
Tuchel has made phone and video calls a big part of his reign as England boss and has told players to keep their lines open after the World Cup qualifiers with Albania and Latvia. It is likely to include not just how they played in the games but their interaction around the camp in terms of what he likes and what they can improve on.
Tuchel has put a huge emphasis on leadership and it is understood the Football Association’s head of psychology Richard Hampson was with the squad for the week-long camp.

Hampson, who was appointed by the FA last September, was asked to look at players’ behaviour, to identify good leaders and interaction between players.
That is clearly a major part of Tuchel’s thinking as he wanted to bring a club environment to the England camp and was a big part of the reason he brought back Jordan Henderson to the squad because he is popular and respected in the dressing room.
England boss Tuchel spoke to players individually about leadership and Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa said that was one of the key areas he was told that he can improve upon.
Konsa, who started both games, said in an interview during the camp: “That’s something that he told us, me, when he came in, how much he wanted us to be together, even more so than before.
“He wanted leaders and I think for me, especially as, on a personal level, I think that’s something that I want to try and improve on in my game. Become more of a leader, and hopefully under the boss I can do more of that.”
Tuchel called and FaceTimed dozens of players before naming his squad earlier this month, explaining reasons for their inclusions, what they can do better and so on.
The England boss says he will only get 60 days with the players before the World Cup next year and therefore wants to get to know them and stay in touch via phone and Zoom.
That will remain the case after this camp and he told several players they can expect a call to run through likes and dislikes from both games and also the get-together.
