The Outer Worlds 2 Gets Live-Action Trailer Celebrating its “Big Sequel Energy”

With The Outer Worlds 2 coming out on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S at the end of the month, developer Obsidian Entertainment has released a new trailer for the title. Dubbed Big Sequel Energy, the trailer humorously points out how much of a massive upgrade the upcoming sequel will be over the original The Outer Worlds. Check it out below.

The star-studded trailer for The Outer Worlds 2 features Marc Evan Jackson in the role of the head of a survey group, along with Ben Schwartz as Mark, the “head of sequels”, who is trying to woo the survey group with gift cards and an unseen live-action trailer. Funnily enough, members of the survey group are more interested in the gameplay being shown over Mark’s theatricality, which also ends up involving a choir singing about “BSE – big sequel energy”.

Along with all of the live-action goofiness, the trailer also showcases a montage of gameplay from The Outer Worlds 2, outlining its various companions, worlds, corporations, gameplay styles, and weapons.

Obsidian Entertainment has made no secret of the fact that it has been working on ensuring that The Outer Worlds 2 will be a bigger, better and deeper game than the original was. Back in August, creative lead Leonard Boyarsky had spoken about his initial plans for a sequel to The Outer Worlds, especially when it came to the title’s overall scope.

“We established the world, but we had a much smaller slice of it,” said Boyarsky about the original The Outer Worlds. “That was always my plan, if we were fortunate to make a sequel: go much bigger and deeper. Because it was so much smaller and our time and resources were so much more restricted, we had to make a lot of decisions where we were making things shorter and easier to digest. In a lot of ways, The Outer Worlds 2 delivers on the fantasy we had when we started the first game.”

He also spoke about his goal of making sure the story of The Outer Worlds 2 is compelling with good pacing, while also ensuring that players that want to focus on gameplay won’t have the story getting in their way. “The heart of it, always, for me, has been the story, the world, and the narrative – and it’s very important that the story doesn’t get in the way of the player having a great experience with their character,” he explained. “I don’t think that changes with the technology.”

As for the sheer amount of content in The Outer Worlds 2, director Brandon Adler had said earlier this month that the opening biome of the game – dubbed Paradise Island – will be quite massive, and will take players more than a dozen hours to fully explore.

“It’s just when we were doing [Paradise Island], we wanted to see how far we could push things…we spent a lot of time kind of referencing other games, looking at pacing between all of the different [points of interest], things like that,” he said. “So Paradise Island ended up being pretty big and meaty.”
