Former US President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary, are among several high-profile people to receive subpoenas from the US House oversight committee investigating deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and demanding testimony to the horrific crimes the financier committed.
Several former attorneys general and directors of the FBI are also among those whom Republican James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, issued the subpoenas on Tuesday, August 5th, according to several news outlets.
In the letter to Bill Clinton, Comer noted that the former president had flown four times on Epstein’s private jet, and repeated an allegation that he had “pressured” Vanity Fair not to publish sex trafficking claims regarding Epstein.
Bill was ‘tight’ with Ghislaine
The chair also said that Clinton was “allegedly close” with Ghislaine Maxwell, a British socialite serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted on sex trafficking charges related to Epstein.
“Given your past relationships with Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell, the Committee believes that you have information regarding their activities that is relevant to the Committee’s investigation,” Comer wrote.
In his letter to Hillary Clinton, Comer draws a more tenuous connection, writing: “Your family appears to have had a close relationship with both Jeffrey Epstein and his co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell”.
Seeking the truth about Epstein’s history
In addition to details about them, Comer said that Clinton “may have knowledge of efforts by the federal government to combat international sex trafficking operations of the type run by Mr. Epstein”.
The committee Comer leads is seeking the truth about Epstein’s history, after President Donald Trump’s administration decided against releasing more federal files on the late financier. This decision enraged Trump’s supporters and some Democrats.
Politicians and other experts believe the files include a “client list” of famous men affiliated with Epstein. As the rift between Trump and his conservative base on Epstein continues to widen, the committee, made up of both Democrats and Republicans, recently voted to issue the subpoenas.
A saga spanning 2 decades
Comer scheduled Bill Clinton’s deposition on October 14th, and Hillary’s on October 9th. Others who received subpoenas are scheduled to render testimony from mid-August through early October, while U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has until August 19th to release documents related to the case, according to The Guardian.
The Epstein legal saga has spanned two decades, with Florida police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation first scrutinising the well-connected man for allegations of sexual abuse in the early 2000s, the BBC reported.
Lawyers for Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s associate who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking, had indicated she was willing to testify before the powerful investigatory committee, with strict legal protections. Her scheduled August 11th deposition, though, has been postponed indefinitely.
