You might’ve seen it already — a tiny blue circle sitting quietly in the corner of your WhatsApp screen. Tap on it, and suddenly you’re chatting with Meta AI, a brand-new virtual assistant that’s crept into the app without much of an introduction.
It’s designed to be helpful. Ask it a question, get an answer. Need a recommendation, a quick fact, even an AI-generated image? It’s all there, just like magic. But here’s the thing: a lot of people don’t want it.
Meta AI on WhatsApp: The new feature you didn’t ask for
The feature rolled out almost silently, showing up in people’s chats like just another contact. No real announcement, no clear way to switch it off. And that’s part of what’s bothering users.
Some are raising privacy concerns — and fairly so. No one really knows what kind of data Meta AI is collecting or how it’s being used. And while Meta says it’s safe, many users aren’t convinced. After all, this isn’t some obscure app — it’s WhatsApp, where people share everything from family updates to bank transfers.
Others are simply annoyed. Maybe they don’t need a chatbot in their lives, or they just don’t want to see it cluttering up their chat list. And then there are those who are thinking a bit bigger — about the impact AI is already having on the world around us.
It’s not just about privacy. It’s also about power. Literally. Running AI takes a massive amount of energy. Elon Musk even warned recently that electricity could become one of the biggest limits to AI development. Just to generate one AI image? That can use as much energy as half a phone charge. And now we’ve got millions of users playing with AI on WhatsApp every day.
How to remove Meta AI from WhatsApp (Even if you can’t disable it completely)
If you’re wondering whether you can turn it off, the short answer is no. At least, not completely. Meta doesn’t offer an official option to remove it entirely from the app.
That said, you can make it disappear from your chat list. Just open the conversation with Meta AI, tap the three dots in the top-right corner, and hit ‘Delete chat’. That’ll remove it — for now. But the moment you search for Meta AI or tap the blue circle again, it’ll pop right back up.
It’s not a huge deal for some. But for others, it’s a reminder of how big tech can quietly slip new tools into the apps we use every day — no explanation, no consent, just there.
And while AI might be the future, not everyone wants it watching from the corner of their screen.
