Tens of thousands of climate activists protest across Germany ahead of upcoming federal election

Thousands of activists demonstrated in Germany on Friday in a bid to raise awareness to climate issues ahead of the upcoming federal elections scheduled for 23 February.

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Germany on Friday to protest and raise awareness to climate issues ahead of the country’s upcoming federal elections.

Activists believe the climate crisis has been ignored in the upcoming German elections, scheduled for 23 February.  They say that other issues, like debates on immigration and the economy have largely overshadowed the pressing issue.

Protesters held banners reading “Right on a future, instead of a right (wing) future” as they marched down the streets of the capital near the parliament.

The demonstration was organised by Fridays for Future, a global youth-led climate strike movement focused on promoting awareness to the climate crisis and fighting for change.

The group says the protests – which was announced back in November of last year on the group’s website and social media channels –surpassed the 100,000 participant mark in some 150 places across the Germany.

The protests come just over a week before Germans head to the polling stations to vote in what has been dubbed as the most crucial election in the country’s recent history.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party appears to be heading for its strongest national election result yet this month.

They’ve often attacked green policies and expressed a desire to impose no action to tackle the crisis.

Polls place the AfD in second place ahead of the national election quickly approaching, and are projected to secure approximately 20% of the votes.
