Starbucks, Car Toys close on Broadway in Denver; coffee giant ‘closing all non drive-thrus’

One wants a drive-thru. The other went bankrupt.

Starbucks and Car Toys closed their doors at the shopping center at Sixth Avenue and Broadway on Wednesday.

“Starbucks is closing all non drive-thrus, it wasn’t anything specific about the space they didn’t like,” said JLL broker Jeff Feldman.

Feldman and colleague Sam Zaitz are marketing Starbuck’s 1,700 square feet at 575 Lincoln St. for lease. He noted the location’s visibility, proximity to other neighborhoods and heavy traffic around the area.

What will happen to Car Toys, however, is more of an open question.

The Washington-based car electronics and audio retailer entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this week and announced it intends to sell 35 of its 47 stores in Colorado, Texas, Washington and Oregon to a collection of employees and competitors.

In Colorado, seven of Car Toy’s 10 stores between Colorado Springs and Fort Collins have found buyers, bankruptcy filings show.

Noticeably absent, however, are the company’s stores in Boulder, Parker and along Broadway in Denver, which have closed. In bankruptcy filings, the company said it plans to “reject” the leases of money-losing stores for which it couldn’t find a buyer.

Car Toys had operated in the Broadway Central retail center since at least 1999, according to past media coverage.

Northpond Partners, Broadway Central’s owner, declined to comment. The Chicago real estate investor purchased the property last year for $12.2 million. It later added a corner retail property in RiNo for $17 million.

Broadway Central does have one new tenant on the way. Cava is taking over the former Pizzeria Locale space.
