In a world where technology seems to be able to do just about anything, the challenge is not in innovation itself but rather in unlocking its true potential. This philosophy perfectly captures Phil Le Brun, who went from a McDonald’s executive to strategist at Amazon Web Services. Skilled imagination, for Le Brun, is how technology transforms; a pragmatic, customer-focused approach underpins his work

From Happy Meals to Cloud Transformations, Phil Le Brun

Phil Le Brun’s career started with an astonishing 31 years of service in McDonald’s, during which he was integral in leading the digital transformation for the fast-food giant.

“We did things in one year that, without the cloud, would have been impossible,” he says. From zero to 21,000 restaurants on mobile ordering and delivery platforms in less than a year, the scale and speed of the transformation were unparalleled.

This feat was made possible by AWS, which allowed McDonald’s to bypass the logistical nightmares of traditional IT infrastructure.

“Without the cloud, we’d have spent months negotiating data centers and guessing capacity. AWS let us deploy globally in hours, not years,” Le Brun explains.

The Two-Pizza Team Philosophy

Central to Le Brun’s success is the concept of the “two-pizza team,” a hallmark of Amazon’s innovation culture. The idea is simple: teams should be small enough to be fed by two pizzas. “For context,” Le Brun quips, “that’s two American pizzas, not European ones.” By keeping teams nimble and focused, organizations can foster agility and collaboration.

Skills and Imagination: The True Differentiators

To Le Brun, however, technology is only half the equation. “The tech is there – it can do almost anything. The real challenge is using it effectively, which requires new skills and a different way of thinking.”

He emphasizes that what really enables innovation is not the technology itself but the skills and imagination of those who wield it.

He quotes a surprising statistic: 79% of the challenges in leveraging data come from people, organizational structures, and culture. In that direction, he recommends equipping the organizations with necessary skills to move towards data-driven decision-making.

Generative AI: A Catalyst for Change

Le Brun is particularly passionate about generative AI, describing it as “incredibly powerful for the right problems.” However, he warns that organizations often fail to tap into its full potential due to a lack of understanding about how to harness their data effectively.

He suggests the secret lies in retrieval-augmented generation:

“It’s not just about large language models but about tailoring them to your business problems and using your own data to develop bespoke solutions.”

In so doing, businesses can elevate their operations and improve customer engagement in ways unimaginable to this day.

The Customer-First Approach

Le Brun’s approach is a deep manifestation of customer obsession, an important cornerstone in Amazon’s philosophy.

“Innovation isn’t about chasing trends; it’s about solving real problems for your customers.”

AWS’s approach involves working backward from the customer’s needs, ensuring that the solutions provided align with their specific challenges and goals.

The customer-centric approach to innovation means that AWS has been able to make its costs 134 times cheaper since the company started and accessible to businesses of all sizes. According to Le Brun, “The goal is to democratize technology so that everyone can benefit from it.”

Sustainability in the Cloud

Le Brun also advocates for cloud computing’s sustainability benefits. Traditional data centers often run at maximum capacity 24/7, burning energy and resources. In contrast, the elasticity of the cloud means that organizations can scale up or dial down usage according to demand, significantly reducing their carbon footprint.

AWS has done all it can: from the use of power-efficient chipsets to achieving 100 percent renewable energy usage seven years in advance of its 2030 goal.

“Sustainability isn’t a buzzword, but part of how we think when designing and operating our data centers.”

Beyond Technology: Culture Takes Center Stage

While Le Brun is quick to acknowledge the power of AWS’s technology, he stresses that it’s the organizational culture that truly sets Amazon apart.

“Every individual in the company is encouraged to innovate,” he says. This pervasive culture of innovation, combined with AWS’s technological prowess, creates a powerful synergy that drives continuous improvement.

Le Brun says this cultural and technology blend will be the enabler for organizations to reimagine their operations.

“Technology is just a tool, but it is the people’s mindset using that technology which unlocks its potential.”

Lifelong Learning

The same certainly applies to Le Brun himself. He has pursued his journey, learning never stops. In 2018, he enrolled in a technology and data science course at the University of Edinburgh-a new student in his own right, despite three decades of career experience.

“I realized that some of the programs I used to write in 300 lines of code can now be done in 14,” he marvels. “It’s an incredible time to be a developer.”

The Power of Skills and Imagination

For Le Brun, the only limits to what can be achieved with technology are skills and imagination.

“When we help organizations reimagine how they work, that’s when the magic happens.”

From helping local councils use AI to improve accessibility for those with learning challenges to transforming global supply chains, his work shows the transformative potential of a skill-driven, customer-focused approach.

Le Brun’s philosophy is clear: technology may be the enabler, but it’s people who drive the change. By fostering a culture of innovation, equipping teams with the right skills, and keeping the customer at the center of every decision, organizations can not only keep up with the pace of technological advancement but thrive in it.

To Phil Le Brun, this isn’t about how many pizzas – or for that matter Happy Meals – it takes to feed a team; this is feeding their imagination and their skill toward a better future.
