Google has added a couple of powerful new tools to Google Photos, including some AI features that were formerly exclusive to the Pixel 9 series.

Google Photos is now ten years old, and has accrued an impressive 1.5 billion users. To mark the occasion, Google has issued an update containing a couple of handy new AI tools, all wrapped up in an intuitive new UI.

One of these new features is a new editor that pairs intuitive AI-powered suggestions with all of the necessary editing tools, and bundles them all in one place.

Those AI suggestions let you combine multiple editing solutions simultaneously for speedy edits. You can also tap a specific portion of an image and receive localised edit suggestions.

Having debuted in Magic Editor for the Google Pixel 9 series, Auto Frame and Reimagine will now start rolling out to the wider Android ecosystem.

The former uses AI to automatically frame the subject in your image, even generating more of the background if necessary. The latter lets you replace a section of a photo with almost anything you can think of using natural language requests.

Google says that this new Google Photos editor will start rolling out on Android devices from next month, with iOS following some time later this year.

QR album codes and more

Another new addition, which is rolling out now, is the ability to generate QR codes for sharing albums. These can be shared directly from your device, or printed off for quick and easy access.

Google’s announcement post also contains a range of tips for getting the most out of the new Google Photos app. These include guidance on how to revisit the places you’ve been, searching for pictures on an intuitive map according to geolocation data.

We also get a reminder that you can use natural language to search for specific photos (example used: “me in a sparkly blue dress”), enjoy monthly or annual recaps, and more.
