Peak creators go to war with Roblox's slop ripoff

Roblox hosts all sorts of games, from cozy experiences like Grow A Garden to capitalistic hellscape simulators like Steal a Brainrot. But the game creation platform is also rife with copycat games that take, shall we say, heavy inspiration from hot games on other platforms. Typically, this means you can expect to see a Roblox version of the latest big-budget game, but every so often the knockoff phenomenon will hit a successful indie game, like 2017’s Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy. Perhaps it’s the curse of games tasking players with climbing mountains, but the latest hit to get copied on Roblox is none other than Peak.

Peak is one of 2025’s runaway hits, and it’s easy to understand why. With its bright aesthetic and silly game mechanics — like the recent addition of player-versus-player cannibalism — Peak was practically made for the age of Twitch. It’s a great game to pick up with your friends and test your bonds, and with random generation and a healthy number of updates, there’s plenty of reason to revisit the humble indie game.

Now there’s a version of Peak on Roblox as well, and… it’s called Cliff. In the couple of weeks it’s been available, Cliff’s already been visited over 5 million times. The premise will likely sound familiar:

⛰️CLIFF is a challenging climbing game where even the smallest mistake can be your downfall. Trapped on a mysterious island, your only way to escape is to reach the top of the towering cliff. Do you have the skill and courage to make it to the summit?

✋WORK TOGETHER
Need some help? You’ll have to rely on your friends if you want any chance of reaching the top. The mountain is tough, so help each other up ledges and watch out for dangers to make the climb easier for those who come after you

To the game’s credit, the listing does say that Cliff is inspired by Peak. But when the artwork and characters are made to intentionally look like their inspiration, arguably the game crosses into murky territory.

At least Peak’s creators think so, based on a recent social media post. “tbh would rather you pirate our game than play this microtransaction-riddled @Roblox slop ripoff,” reads a post by Aggro Crab, the studio behind Peak.

If this seems like an intense response to a fan game, it’s worth knowing that sometimes, the knock-off versions on Roblox can be massive. In the case of Getting Over It, the game has received over 82 million clicks. There are hundreds of people playing that game right now, two years after it was uploaded to Roblox. As of this writing, there are under 10,000 people playing Cliff on Roblox as well.

What’s really rubbed people the wrong way is that Cliff offers a variety of in-game purchases, such as items that improve your Stamina useage and an in-game pet. All of the options are cheap, but if you’re spending a couple of dollars for a Roblox version that likely doesn’t match the highs of the real thing, you might as well spend that money on Peak itself. It only costs $7.99!

Based on replies on social media, players agree with that sentiment as well. “Don’t tell me what to do,” one response to Aggro Crab’s post reads. “I’m going to buy it even harder now.”

“I’d rather just pay the extremely reasonable $8 it costs for one of the best co-op games I’ve ever played, but that’s just me,” another declares.
