Outer Worlds 2 temporarily unavailable to purchase on Xbox

Obsidian’s RPG sequel The Outer Worlds 2 launches today. But the process hasn’t been as seamless as the devs and series fans would have liked. Shortly after the game’s launch at 1 p.m. EDT, would-be players began reporting difficulty accessing the game on Xbox consoles, Windows PC, and via Game Pass. The issues with accessing The Outer Worlds 2 are due to a wider outage affecting Microsoft’s Azure platform, which is the digital foundation for much of the company’s software and networking infrastructure.

Obsidian is aware of the outage and has been keeping players posted with regular updates via Bluesky. “We’re working with Microsoft to resolve the issue and will update players when we have more information,” the team says later in the thread.

Unfortunately, Obsidian has little control over getting the issue resolved — this is a much broader issue for parent company Microsoft to handle. On the company’s Azure status page, Microsoft notes, “We have initiated the deployment of our last known good configuration, which is expected to complete within 30 minutes. As this deployment progresses, customers should begin to see initial signs of recovery.” I

t’s unclear how long after that 30-minute window Xbox users can expect to get unfettered access to The Outer Worlds 2, or if there will be differing waits for Game Pass versus PC users, and so on. For the moment, Obsidian’s social media accounts are the best source for up-to-the-minute coverage.

The Azure outage marks the second time in as many weeks that a major tech company has seen its cloud infrastructure taken out of commission for hours on end. On Oct. 20, Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced an outage that took down several of the world’s most popular games and services, including Fortnite, Roblox, and Nintendo‘s online store.
