OpenAI, Anthropic to expand Dublin office space

OpenAI established its Dublin presence in 2023, and Anthropic, a year later in 2024.

AI giants OpenAI and Anthropic are exploring options to expand their office footprints in Dublin, reports Bloomberg.

Sources have told the publication that the two companies could be leasing around 25,000 sq ft of office space each in the city. Although the number could be lower. The companies currently occupy spots in flexible co-working offices in Dublin.

SiliconRepublic.com reached out to OpenAI and Anthropic for comments on the report. The companies declined to respond.

OpenAI established its Irish presence back in 2023, making Dublin its European headquarters. This came just a year after the company launched its revolutionary large language model ChatGPT, marking the beginning of an AI-led technological transformation.

At the time, CEO Sam Altman said that the company chose Ireland because it “blends a talented workforce with support for innovation and responsible business growth”.

According to OpenAI, the company currently employs around 60 in the city, with plans to hire more in the future.

Meanwhile, Claude-maker and OpenAI rival Anthropic launched its Dublin presence last year, establishing the city as its Europe, Middle East and Africa headquarters.

Recently, the company announced that it would be tripling its global workforce. The expansion plans include more than 100 new jobs, primarily across Dublin and London.

Moreover, Anthropic is expected to announce newer European offices, according to comments the company made a few months ago. The company opened a Tokyo office earlier this year. EMEA was its fastest growing region, according to a recent company blogpost.

Major tech companies, including Meta, Google, LinkedIn and Airbnb all have their European headquarters in Dublin.

Last month OpenAI launched the ‘OpenAI for Ireland’ framework in partnership with the Irish Government, start-up hub Dogpatch Labs and young entrepreneurs programme Patch to support local AI capabilities.
