A grey Nike Tech tracksuit has unexpectedly become one of the most talked-about fashion items online after images circulated showing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro being seized by US forces wearing the outfit. The photograph, shared by Donald Trump on January 3, quickly sparked memes, jokes, and a surge in demand for the popular athleisure set.
According to Business Insider, internet users rapidly identified the grey Nike Tech fleece jacket and joggers worn by Maduro, turning an otherwise routine arrest image into a viral fashion moment.
Online searches and social media buzz for Nike Tech tracksuit spike
Following Trump’s post, searches for “Nike Tech” rose dramatically, according to Google Trends. Data shared by intelligence platform PeakMetrics showed that mentions of Nike Tech on X exceeded 5,000 posts per day between January 3 and January 5.
That represents a sharp increase from an average of around 325 daily posts recorded between November 1 and December 31. On TikTok, users posted AI-generated versions of the image, alongside parody “steal the look” videos breaking down the cost of the outfit.
Nike Tech outfit sells out across key sizes
The attention quickly translated into sales. According to GameReactor, the grey Nike Tech set – priced at around €219 for the jacket and trousers combined – sold out in multiple sizes on Nike’s US website within hours.
La Nación reported that the grey colourway worn by Maduro was the first to disappear, with other colours seeing increased demand shortly afterwards.
Nike stays silent as viral moment continues
Despite the sudden surge in attention, Nike has declined to comment on the viral episode. Social media reactions have ranged from ironic praise to jokes about “accidental marketing,” highlighting how high-profile news events can unexpectedly influence consumer trends.
