MindsEye Issues on PS5 Prompt Sony to Issue Refunds

While developer Build A Rocket Boy has admitted to optimisation and technical issues with its recent action game MindsEye, Sony is seemingly treating the game like it did Cyberpunk 2077 back when it was first released on PS4. As caught by Insider Gaming, according to Reddit user MasterOfMoogles1995, Sony is approving of no-questions-asked refunds for MindsEye because of its technical issues.

The Reddit user posted a picture of their conversation with PlayStation support. In one of the messages, the PlayStation support team member acknowledges that the buyer was correct in pointing out that MindsEye – unlike what it says on its PlayStation Store page description – is not able to run at 60 frames per second.

“It seems you are correct regarding optimisation for this game,” responded PlayStation’s support team member. “The situation is currently under investigation. But in the meantime, let’s proceed with your refund request.”

Sony has historically been notoriously stingy about offering refunds for digital copies of games bought through PlayStation Store. As we mentioned earlier, the last time this happened was with Cyberpunk 2077’s PS4 release, which had so many technical issues, Sony ultimately ended up de-listing the game from its online store.

Another dissatisfied MindsEye player – WolfgangMishima – took to social media platform X to reveal their own conversation with PlayStation support. In the conversation, the support team member notes that while refunds for games bought from PlayStation Store aren’t typically allowed, the fact that the player is still having problems with MindsEye when it comes to its optimisation allows them an exception.

“I was checking if it was possible to process the refund for you and I have good news,” wrote the PlayStation support team member. “Usually, we are not allowed to process refunds for games that were downloaded because of the PlayStation Store cancellation policy. However, we understand that you are having issues with the game after the troubleshooting that you did and that you want to request a refund for it, so we’ll do an exception and process your refund as a goodwill gesture on your account.”

For its part, Build A Rocket Boy recently announced that it will be rolling out a hotfix for MindsEye. The update, slated for release on PC first, will be making its way to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game “as soon as possible.”

In its announcement the studio said that its priority with the update was to improve overall optimisation for the game on both the CPU and GPU front, as well as in other ways, like warning players with pop-ups if they try to run MindsEye without features like Accelerated GPU Scheduling enabled.

“Right now, our top priority is game performance,” wrote the studio. “We understand that the requirements are high and have limited the experience for many of you, and for this, we sincerely apologize.”

MindsEye was released on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S earlier this week. For more details about the game, check out our review, where we gave it a score of five out of ten.
