Michael Carrick puts pressure on Man Utd to complete massive U-turn with new comments

Michael Carrick landed the Manchester United job until the end of the season but he has made it clear he is loving the role ahead of a crunch decision in the summer

Michael Carrick made it clear that being the Manchester United boss is “the ultimate role” but he doesn’t decide how long he’ll have the job – with club bosses currently planning to have him until the summer.

The former Red Devils player has been handed the reigns until the end of the season following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. The club’s plan had been to pursue their long-term boss in the summer, but Carrick is putting together an impressive body of work.

United had been struggling until his arrival but the 44-year-old won four successive games to begin his tenure – which included wins over Manchester City at Old Trafford, and then away at Arsenal.

The Red Devils have been linked with the likes of Oliver Glasner and Marco Silva, but Carrick is becoming a hard man to ignore. The club confirmed his appointment in a statement last month, which underlined his position was until the end of the season. However Carrick has made it clear he’s in a dream job.

He said: “It’s not a stock answer – for me, it’s the ultimate role. I’m really enjoying it, I love what I’m doing. I’m fortunate. I feel privileged to be in the position I am, but it’s not the fact that I believe I can do it and I’m here to do it.

“I said it when I came in – there’s the sentimental side of that… of understanding the role and coming through the club and being here and loving the club and being a supporter and all that side of it is one thing. But, actually, I’m here to do a job now and to make a good team and be successful.

“I don’t decide how long that’s going to be but I love being here and and while I’m here, I’ll give everything I can. And I always plan for the long-term future for the benefit of the football club. That’s how I believe it should be.”

Carrick is the bookmakers favourite to be in charge of United for the start of next season. Should he deliver a top four finish, which looked well beyond the club at the beginning of the campaign when Amorim was in charge, then the ex-England international would be in pole position to land the role.

Carrick had only taken charge of two top flight games prior to this spell at United – and they came in the aftermath of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking when he was caretaker. His most recent role had seen him in charge of Middlesbrough in the Championship.
