Marcus Rashford has been in good form since joining Aston Villa on loan in January, and ex-Manchester United star Teddy Sheringham doesn’t see him returning to Old Trafford
Following another standout performance on loan with Aston Villa, Marcus Rashford looks increasingly likely to secure a full-time exit from Manchester United this summer. And according to Red Devils icon Teddy Sheringham, the forward’s impressive run means there’s virtually no scenario where the United academy graduate returns to Old Trafford.
Now 27, Rashford was once considered a symbol of United’s proud legacy of nurturing local talent. But his trajectory has shifted dramatically in recent years due to his topsy-turvy form, multiple disciplinary issues and constant managerial upheaval.
At Villa, however, he’s thriving – and nearly guided the team to a Champions League semi-final after setting up Ezri Konsa’s goal against PSG with a dazzling solo run. Given how content he appears in Birmingham, Sheringham doubts there’s any motivation for the striker to make a return to the Red Devils.
“I don’t think there’s a way back for Marcus Rashford at Man United,” he told CasinoApps.com when questioned about a potential return to his parent side. “I don’t think he wants to.
“I look at the body language he giving off at Villa, and it’s like he couldn’t be any happier to be further away from Manchester United if he tried, to be honest. I think that’s the vibe.
“I still don’t see an unbelievable change in his body language at Villa, but I see a slight difference in as much as… he’s trying to enjoy his football at the moment, and he’s fitting in more with the Aston Villa players than what he was with the players at Man United.”
He added: “I don’t think Marcus Rashford has any future at Manchester United after this season.”
Rashford has impressed so much at Villa Park that he even kept fan-favourite Ollie Watkins out of the starting XI for both Champions League quarter-final matches against PSG. Unai Emery faced backlash from some supporters when he swapped Watkins in for Rashford in the 76th minute, considering how influential the Manchester-born forward had been.
Rashford began the season in underwhelming fashion, and things took a turn for the worse when Ruben Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. After being dropped from United’s squad for the Manchester derby, Rashford was left on the sidelines by the new manager, and was loaned out a few weeks later.
Since arriving at Villa, he’s racked up three goals and six assists in just 15 outings, with his overall energy and creativity fuelling belief that he’s rediscovering peak form. The Villans have the option to buy Rashford permanently for £40million – a potential steal if he sustains his performance level.
That said, it’s likely he’ll have to agree to a wage cut from his current £300,000-a-week salary, of which Villa are reportedly covering about 75% during the loan spell.
At the very least, this rejuvenated version of Rashford has attracted attention, possibly setting up a summer move elsewhere if Villa don’t activate their buy option. And Sheringham, for his part, is convinced that a clean break would benefit everyone involved.
