Liverpool news: Trent Alexander-Arnold's return approved as Slot makes transfer statement

Liverpool continue to dominate transfer news with boss Arne Slot confirming his stance

A chance at redemption exists for Liverpool in a week that has seen morale dramatically decline among the club’s fanbase. The Reds are back in action on Friday as part of their FA Cup duties as they make their second trip to Molineux this week to take on Wolves in the fifth round of the competition.

Their meeting in the Black Country on Tuesday resulted in the Premier League’s bottom club pulling off a shock 2-1 win following Andre’s deflected goal in the 94th minute. The defeat – which was Liverpool’s ninth of the league season – led to conversations surrounding the future direction of the team under Arne Slot.

With many fans believing another summer of mass investment is needed to return the Reds to Premier League and Champions League contention, one former Liverpool star had his say on the possibility of Trent Alexander-Arnold returning to Merseyside. Mirror Football takes a look at the latest stories coming out of Anfield, including Slot’s statement on the club’s transfer matters.

Alexander-Arnold return

A return to Anfield for Alexander-Arnold would be branded as an improbable transfer for many, but for ex-Reds right-back Glen Johnson, it’s a move he’d love to see. The role has been one of constant chop and change since the 27-year-old’s move to Real Madrid last year.

Summer signing Jeremie Frimpong has struggled with muscle injuries, while Conor Bradley is out of action for the rest of the season following knee surgery. The England star has had a troublesome start to his Madrid career with his own injury issues, which have seen him start just seven La Liga games this season.

Johnson – who spent six years at Liverpool – admitted Alexander-Arnold would be his ideal option to start as the Reds’ right-back next season. The 41-year-old told Boyle Sport: “Who would be my choice to be Liverpool’s starting right-back next season? You’d love to see Trent back, of course you would.”

Arne Slot’s transfer statement

Slot oversaw the most expensive summer of recruitment in Premier League history when Liverpool spent £450million on nine players. While it hasn’t been the perfect start to life at Anfield for the likes of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, it was a window the Dutchman maintains was a wholly successful one.

Slot said this week: “I’m so happy with what we did last summer. We signed such great players but some of them needed some time to adapt and some of them have mainly been injured.

“Adaptation you can predict because that’s what we knew, but that some signings and some others got some long-term injuries isn’t something you can predict.”

Admitting that Liverpool’s transfer model directs away from having a large squad, Slot insisted the club’s policy is one he’s happy with despite its drawbacks when several players are injured at the same time.

He explained: “It’s the model that we don’t have 25 players over here. We have a different model over here. Then it hurts even more if you have three or four long-term injuries at the moment. I always knew when I came in here that this was the model and I’m really happy with that.”
