Crisp giant Lay’s has been thrown into a frying pan of trouble after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an urgent recall of one of its popular products – slapping it with the highest possible health risk rating.
The snack, sold in select stores and online in Oregon and Washington, contains undeclared milk – a potentially lethal ingredient for those with dairy allergies. The FDA isn’t mincing its words, warning that consuming the affected crisps could cause ‘serious adverse health consequences, including death.’
Health nightmare unfolds
On December 16 2024, the FDA ordered Lay’s parent company, Frito-Lay, to initiate a voluntary recall of specific crisp packets. But in the weeks since, the watchdog has doubled down, recently classifying the recall as a Class 1 emergency – the most serious rating, reserved for products that pose life-threatening dangers.
Crisp catastrophe: a hidden killer?
The major blunder? Milk. The undeclared allergen lurking in the crisps could spell disaster for severe allergy sufferers, especially children. And with the prestigious Mayo Clinic confirming that milk allergies are among the most common in kids, this recall has sent shockwaves through health circles. One accidental bite could lead to severe allergic reactions, hospitalisation, or worse.
The FDA urges consumers to return affected products or bin them to avoid any health risks.
For one of the world’s biggest crisp brands, this is a PR nightmare with potentially deadly consequences for some consumers.
