Three older iPhone models are set to be excluded when Apple rolls out iOS 19 later this year.

Early rumours had suggested that Apple would be maintaining exactly the same roster of supported devices with its next mobile operating system, iOS 19.

However, the latest report from an anonymous and private X (formerly Twitter) user with a solid track record suggests that may not be so.

Which iPhones are set to be excluded from iOS 19?

According to the anonymous tipster (via 9to5Mac), the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR will not be receiving an upgrade to iOS in September.

All three of these phones were released in 2018, and have received some of the most extensive support of any Apple smartphone to date. All currently support iOS 18, which represents the seventh version of Apple’s operating system to run on them.

It’s been a good innings for these three phones, but a move to iOS 19 would represent an unprecedented level of support from Apple – or any manufacturer, for that matter.

The next iPhone on the chopping block

Google and Samsung have guaranteed seven years of software support for their latest phones, the Google Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S25. That’s exactly where the iPhone XS and iPhone XR will be at by the time September rolls around, and we’d expect Apple to continue offering security updates for a couple of years beyond that.

All of which means that the iPhone 11 range will be the oldest phones running on iOS 19. If you’re still running one of those vintage handsets, now might be the time to start saving up for an upgrade. We’re expecting to see the iPhone 17 Air introduce an exciting new option in late 2025, while the iPhone 18 has already been tipped for some serious camera upgrades in 2026.

As for iOS 19, you can bet that Apple will be showcasing its new mobile operating system at WWDC 2025 in June.
