Spanish energy giant Iberdrola has been recognised once again for its leadership in corporate governance, earning the top spot in Spain according to World Finance magazine.

Announced on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the award highlights the company’s strong commitment to transparency, accountability, and stakeholder engagement – marking yet another milestone for one of Europe’s most influential utility firms.

Iberdrola’s accolade comes from World Finance’s Corporate Governance Awards, which honour companies in each country that demonstrate “a commitment to transparency and accountability, creating a better society and helping to address the biggest problems facing the world today.”

Leadership in governance has long been one of Iberdrola’s defining features. Over the past 25 years, the company has built a reputation as a benchmark in ethical business conduct, becoming the largest utility in Europe and one of only two private-sector electricity companies globally with a market capitalisation above €100 billion.

The reasons for Iberdrola’s success

Iberdrola’s success lies in its proactive approach to shareholder engagement and its drive to exceed legal requirements on corporate conduct.

To mark the tenth anniversary of its permanent shareholder engagement policy, Iberdrola recently launched a new space on its corporate website and held a series of meetings with minority shareholders, going beyond the traditional institutional roadshow.

This effort paid off at the 2025 General Meeting, where over three-quarters of shareholders participated, and all board proposals received more than 99 per cent approval.

The company’s governance model also includes early adoption of transparency initiatives:

  • A sustainability report launched 15 years before it became legally required in Spain
  • A tax transparency report demonstrating best practices by Iberdrola España
  • An open-format corporate governance report, which includes detailed updates on board activity, ethics, and compliance.

Iberdrola: A model for corporate culture in Spain

Iberdrola’s Governance and Sustainability System is designed around what it calls “the highest ethical standards.” The company has built a strong Compliance System to ensure adherence to both legal and ethical guidelines – aiming to prevent any form of irregular behaviour.

As the first Ibex 35-listed company to release a full compliance transparency report, Iberdrola says it is committed to a “robust corporate culture” that respects the rights of customers, employees, shareholders, and society at large.

With many multinationals facing growing public scrutiny, Iberdrola’s recognition could set a new standard for companies seeking to win trust, not just profits.
