A RUSSIAN woman has received what is reported to be a massive payout after a glowing green meteorite crashed into the roof of her home in Okulovka, in the Novgorod Region in Russia. Coincidentally, she had read about a fireball hurtling over Moscow on Monday, October 27, and noticed the damage to the roof of her home afterwards.
A priceless meteorite crashes into the roof of her home
The homeowner found a lump of grey rock, visually similar to cement, in the remains of her roof. She shrewdly put them up for sale, where scientists and researchers from the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Geochemistry Institute quickly bought them, though for an undisclosed amount.
According to experts, the meteorite was a chondrite, a type of meteorite that has not undergone melting or differentiation. The meteor, which contained iron and nickel-bearing particles, acquired its alien green glow when it burned up upon entering Earth’s atmosphere, and researchers postulate it had already been broken up, which explains why the woman found the small fragment.
Meteorite made of ancient ‘building blocks’ of the solar system
The amazing spatial find reportedly contains some of the oldest materials known in the solar system, making it not only invaluable as a scientific discovery, but just plain valuable when it comes to its monetary worth. Search teams are already hard at work to locate other fragments of the chondrite meteorite. Researchers are encouraging residents to check their roofs in case a lucky find awaits them.
A special exhibition will be dedicated to the find
“Due to the uniqueness of the event, a coordinated decision was made to remove the damaged section of the roof so that it could later be displayed in an exhibition,” said the scientists in a statement on Saturday, November 15. The Russian Academy of Sciences will hold a special exhibition dedicated to the special event on Thursday, November 20.
Amazingly, this is not the first time this year that an incident like this has been recorded. Last month, London residents witnessed a bright green flash in the sky, which also turned out to be a meteor.
Stargazers relieved the object was just a meteor
The meteorite, when it streaked across the sky in Moscow, was originally postulated to be the Burevestnik missile, dubbed the ‘Flying Chernobyl.’ The weapon is a nuclear-capable mission which Russian president Vladimir Putin claimed to be unstoppable. Now, with the confirmation that it was indeed a meteorite, researchers are excitedly preparing the exhibition for the find and anxious to see what new discoveries the piece of ancient material from the stars might bring.
