With something of a surprise announcement, Google has unveiled the Google TV Streamer and killed off the Chromecast line.
While it looks like a decent set-top box streamer with plenty of good features, I think Google has missed a trick here.
Unlike its predecessors under the Chromecast branding, the Google TV Streamer is designed to be on show. It’s not an HDMI dongle that’s hidden behind your TV.
Google describes the device as having “beautiful design that blends with any decor”, which is a similar line to those used to promote previous smart home products, including Nest devices.
I’m inclined to agree, although more colours than just Obsidian and Hazel would be welcome. The design looks far nicer than boxy rivals such as the Apple TV 4K, but there’s a problem.
When I first saw the Google TV Streamer, I thought “that’s genius”, assuming the design had a built-in wireless charger.
Sadly, it does not. But to my mind, it really should.
Wireless charging isn’t limited to flagship phones these days and can be found on more affordable handsets, as well as various other devices such as wireless earbud and smart ring charging cases.
I’ve got wireless chargers around the house, on my my bedside table and office desk, but none in the living room.
Having it on the Google TV Streamer would be a real boon and an additional reason to buy one, even if it perhaps pushed the cost up beyond its £99/$99 price. Or Google could offer models with and without it.
It’s a shame and a missed trick. If I get a Google TV Streamer, it will no doubt be locked away with all the other things that are plugged into my TV, in spite of its attractive design.
