Google is working on a new Pixel app that promises to bring all of your messages together into one place on your Pixel smartphone, including WhatsApp.
Modern messaging can be a bit of a pain, with multiple apps vying for your chatting time. Google’s proposed solution is the Pixel Besties app, and there’s evidence that it could incorporate the biggest third-party messaging service of them all.
What is Pixel Besties?
Android Authority has spotted code in the latest WhatsApp beta (v2.25.3.22, if you’re interested) that points to a new content provider named Pixel Besties. There are also references to a so-called Pixel Relationships app or service within the code.
Previous discoveries within the Google Contacts app pin Pixel Besties (formerly known as VIPs) as an app that pulls together all of your interactions with certain frequent contacts into one handy UI.
We’re talking messages, calls, status updates, location information and more.
The earlier Google Contact discovery uncovered a widget that would surface all this contact information on your home screen.
What does it have to do with WhatsApp?
With this latest mention of Pixel Besties in the WhatsApp app, it seems certain that WhatsApp support has been sought and acquired by Google.
It should mean that you’ll be able to access your WhatsApp chats (in some limited capacity at least) from within a new central Google app.
As for a timeline on this new Pixel Besties feature, the source anticipates that it could roll out as part of the next Pixel Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) update for the Pixel 9 series and earlier.
Presumably, WhatsApp will lead the way, in conjunction with Google’s own Messages app, but we’d expect Meta Messenger to be close behind. After all, WhatsApp is owned by the same company, so there’s clearly a willingness to work together on messaging integration.
