City breaks are getting bigger. Travellers are increasingly using Europe’s major tourist hubs as launchpads for day trips – swapping packed sightseeing schedules for castle visits, wine regions, beaches and mountain escapes, often just a train ride away.

New research has revealed which cities people most want to escape from for a one-day adventure, with London, Paris and Rome topping the list.

Experts at TUI Musement, a provider of tours and activities, analysed Google search volumes to identify the European cities from which travellers most frequently search for day trips.

The team considered all European cities with more than 150,000 inhabitants and, for each destination, they analysed Google search volumes for the term “day trips from [city]”, using both the city’s native name and its English translation.

In the end, they ranked 30 cities across the continent which stand out for both their own appeal and also what can be discovered on a day trip, using the city as a base.

These are the top 10 most popular day trip options from Europe’s top cities.

London, United Kingdom

TUI Musement found the British capital had the most searches related to day trips, with some 260,000 Google hits.

From London, tourists often combine a visit to ancient Stonehenge with the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bath.

Countless tour operators run day trips from London to both sites, and while it may be a long day, it’s a good introduction to the UK’s rich past.

Among the other most popular day trips from the capital are visits to the royal residence of Windsor Castle, and filming locations from the ‘Downton Abbey’ series.

Paris, France

Paris is packed full of cultural must-sees, from the Louvre to the Eiffel Tower, but, increasingly, visitors are using the City of Lights as a base to explore other parts of France.

Preferred destinations include the Palace of Versailles, under an hour by train from Paris, or the charming village of Giverny, most famous as the former home of Claude Monet.

Tourists are also opting to visit Mont Saint-Michel on the west coast, although it does take over two hours each way by train to reach.

Rome, Italy

There’s more to Rome than the Colosseum and the Vatican – it also makes a great base to explore more of beautiful Italy.

Thanks to Italy’s frequent rail connections, the capital offers straightforward day trips to historical Pompeii and the nearby Amalfi Coast, which boasts the likes of Portofino and Sorrento.

In the north of the country, short visits to Tuscany and its vineyards and eateries are especially popular.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona, fascinating on its own, is in a privileged position on the Mediterranean coast, making it ideal for day trips.

Favourites for tourists include the Montserrat mountain range, which attracts plenty of visitors due to its monastery and hiking routes, and the Costa Brava’s pretty towns, including Tossa de Mar and Begur, are also popular.

From Barcelona, it’s also possible to cross into Andorra for a day, and tick off another country on the travel bucket list.

Florence, Italy

Florence is one of the best bases for exploring Tuscany, with easy day trips to some of Italy’s most famous spots.

Tourists regularly head for Pisa to snap a photo with the Leaning Tower, while the medieval city of Siena – home to the stunning Piazza del Campo – is another favourite.

Wine tours through Chianti and visits to hilltop towns like San Gimignano are also hugely popular for those wanting a slower pace amid classic Tuscan scenery.

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Edinburgh’s location and transport links make it ideal for exploring Scotland’s wild landscapes beyond the city.

Many visitors head into the Highlands on day tours, taking in Glencoe, Loch Ness and dramatic mountain scenery along the way.

TUI found that there’s also strong demand for trips inspired by ‘Outlander’, with fans of the hit series visiting filming locations across the Scottish countryside.

Milan, Italy

Milan may be Italy’s fashion and design capital, but plenty of travellers use it as a gateway to the lakes and mountains beyond the city.

Lake Como is a particularly popular day trip, with visitors flocking to elegant towns like Bellagio and taking boat cruises across the water.

Trips into the Alps are also a major draw, including journeys on the famous Bernina Express route towards St Moritz in Switzerland.

Dublin, Ireland

Buzzy Dublin is a handy starting point for some of Ireland’s best-known natural attractions.

Popular – and easy – day trips include the Cliffs of Moher, the Wicklow Mountains and the Giant’s Causeway with 40,000 imposing basalt columns.

People basing themselves in Dublin also regularly make the trip to Blarney Castle, where kissing the famous stone is still firmly on many tourists’ must-do lists.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon’s sunny location and strong rail links make it perfect for easy day trips.

The fairy-tale town of Sintra, just over half an hour away from the city, is the standout favourite, thanks to the colourful Pena Palace and the striking Quinta da Regaleira estate.

Many visitors also combine it with nearby Cascais and Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, while the pilgrimage site of Fátima remains a popular option further afield.

Athens, Greece

Athens offers far more than ancient ruins and city sightseeing, with several major attractions within day-trip distance.

Top choices include UNESCO-recognised Delphi, once considered the centre of the ancient world, and Meteora, famous for its monasteries atop towering rock formations.

For travellers wanting an island fix without a long ferry journey, Hydra and Aegina are among the most popular escapes from the Greek capital.
