France has announced a major summit of European leaders set for Monday, aiming to address the conflict in Ukraine and the continent’s broader security concerns.
The move comes as Europe seeks to respond collectively to what it views as President Donald Trump’s unilateral approach to the ongoing war.
Macron gathers Europe’s leaders for urgent security talks
Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot confirmed that President Emmanuel Macron will host the talks in Paris, describing them as a working session rather than a dramatic showdown. Invitations have reportedly been sent to Britain, Germany, Poland, Italy, Denmark, the European Union leadership, and NATO Secretary General, suggesting a concerted effort to gather the continent’s main political and military voices under one roof.
German sources say Chancellor Olaf Scholz is set to attend, while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is also expected. Diplomats suggest the summit will address immediate assistance for Ukraine, the prospect of European-backed security guarantees for Kyiv, and ways to strengthen the region’s collective defence.
Europe pushes for a unified security strategy
The summit arrives against a backdrop of repeated gatherings at which European nations have often appeared indecisive and at odds over how best to resolve the crisis. Three years into Russia’s invasion, Washington’s special envoy Keith Kellogg recently stated that Europe would not have a direct seat at negotiations, raising questions about the continent’s role in any future peace deal. While Monday’s meeting has yet to be officially confirmed by the French presidency, it marks Europe’s latest bid to secure a unified response and exert meaningful influence on the outcome of the war in Ukraine.
