Donald Trump has been laying it on thick for King Charles – prompting whispers of an unlikely bromance between the US President and the British monarch. The President of the United States heaped praise on King Charles, and talked about a US return to the Commonwealth if the King extended an invite.

In a series of gushing social media posts and public remarks, Trump has heaped praise on the King, calling him “a wonderful man” and suggesting the United States would be more than happy to cosy up to the British Commonwealth – if His Majesty extends the invite.

Taking to his platform Truth Social on Friday morning, March 21, Trump wrote: “I love King Charles. Sounds good to me!” – linking to a Daily Mail report which claimed Charles might offer the U.S. associate membership in the 56-nation Commonwealth during Trump’s second state visit later this year.

And he wasn’t done. The President reposted the same article on Saturday morning, doubling down on the idea of the U.S. rejoining a club it stormed out of over two centuries ago.

The reported offer would not make the U.S. a full member, but could symbolise a closer diplomatic and symbolic tie – a move some in royal and political circles believe could help ease cross-Atlantic tensions, especially with Canada, amid ongoing trade skirmishes. There have been no formal confirmations that an offer will be extended or accepted yet, but could it happen?

A royal soft spot

Trump’s admiration for the monarchy is no secret. During his first state visit in 2019, he toasted then-Prince Charles and later described Queen Elizabeth II as “great”, telling Fox News’ Mark Levin in 2023: “I got to know her very well… she never made a mistake.”

He also appears fond of Prince William – whom he met in Paris in December – but has been notably less kind about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who he recently described as simply ‘terrible’.

When asked recently about his relationship with Charles, Trump described the monarch as “beautiful” and said: “I’ve gotten to know him very well actually, first term and, now, a second term.”

That second term reference was followed by a very public acceptance of King Charles’s invitation for another state visit, this time delivered in person by Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House last month.

Holding the letter with pride, Trump declared: “The answer is yes… We look forward to being there and honouring the King and honouring, really, your country. Your country is a fantastic country.”

So, could America be next?

Buckingham Palace has stayed silent, but the idea seems to be gaining steam – at least in Trump’s camp. Could Britain ‘annex’ America into the Commonwealth…?

Whether it’s a symbolic handshake or a full diplomatic embrace, one thing’s clear: Trump’s royal affection is no flash in the pan.

And with compliments flying, state visits looming, and talk of Commonwealth ties rekindling, some are wondering – is this the start of a special relationship 2.0?

Watch this space. The King and the Comeback Kid might just be about to make history.
