Crash Bandicoot animated TV series coming to Netflix, report says

From Tomb Raider to Splinter Cell, Netflix has been steadily churning out animated series based on video game franchises. Next on the docket, reportedly, is Activision’s Crash Bandicoot.

What’s on Netflix reported Monday the streamer is “quietly developing” an animated series starring everyone’s favorite mutated marsupial. Animation studio WildBrain is said to be working on the series. It’s previously partnered with Netflix for series like Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising, and Carmen Sandiego. WildBrain is also developing a Minecraft animated series for Netflix.

Details are scant, including whether the Crash Bandicoot series would directly adapt any of the games or if it would be an original story.

Crash Bandicoot made his debut in the 1996 platformer of the same name from The Last of Us studio Naughty Dog. The franchise started as a PlayStation-exclusive before eventually going multiplatform. 2008’s Crash: Mind Over Mutant was the last console game for the jortsed bandicoot before the franchise went on ice for some time. It eventually returned in 2017 with the remaster collection Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, which ushered in a revival of the series.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time was released in 2020 to a positive reception, although its sales were reportedly not up to what publisher Activision expected. A sequel, Crash 5, was canceled, and the series has only seen a mobile game and a multiplayer action title, Crash Team Rumble, since.

A Netflix show wouldn’t be Crash’s first foray into animation. Crash Bandicoot guest starred in a few episodes of Netflix’s Skylanders Academy. If Crash does end up coming to Netflix in his own series, it would join a long line of video game adaptation projects the streamer has in the works, like series based on Guerrilla Games’ Horizon and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed.
