Argentina has the leading scorer at the Copa América 2024 so far. That’s certainly not a surprise to anyone.
But this next part likely is: That leading scorer is not Lionel Messi.
In fact, Messi did not score in his team’s first two games — though he had some nice chances in the tournament opening win over Canada — and then he sat out Saturday’s game against Peru as he nursed an injury.
Meanwhile, Lautaro Martínez has stolen the show, as the 26-year-old scored twice against Peru, bringing his tournament total to four. No other player has more than two so far, and Martinez’s odds of winning the Golden Boot have jumped from +700 to -135.
