Chuck Mangione, the celebrated jazz flugelhornist and composer best known for his hit “Feels So Good,” has died at the age of 84.

“The family of Chuck Mangione is deeply saddened to share that Chuck peacefully passed away in his sleep at his home in Rochester, New York on July 22, 2025,” his family shared in a statement issued on July 24, 2025.

Who Was Chuck Mangione?

Born on November 29, 1940, in Rochester, New York, Mangione began taking music lessons at age 8, and his talent was evident early on. He studied at the Eastman School of Music in his hometown and began recording with his brother, Gap Mangione, in the jazz group The Jazz Brothers.

Throughout his solo career, Mangione released more than 30 albums, earning multiple Grammy nominations and two wins. His 1977 hit “Feels So Good” became one of the most recognizable instrumental tracks of its time and helped define the sound of late ’70s jazz-pop.

In addition to chart success, Mangione composed the theme for the 1980 Winter Olympics, titled “Give It All You Got,” which further cemented his place in American cultural history. Later in life, he also gained a new generation of fans with a recurring animated version of himself on the long-running Fox sitcom King of the Hill, where he provided his own voice in a humorous, self-referential role.

In recognition of his lifelong contributions to music and his hometown, Mangione was inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame in 2017.

In the statement shared by his family, no cause of death was specified—they simply said he “peacefully passed away in his sleep” at his home in Rochester, New York.

However, a report from TMZ stated that Mangione died of natural causes. “Famed jazz musician Chuck Mangione is dead … TMZ has confirmed,” the outlet wrote. “The flugelhorn and trumpet player died this week at his home in Rochester, New York … according to his manager. We’re told Chuck died from natural causes.”
