Luca Brecel failed to qualify for the Wuhan Open on Monday after the former world champion was stunned 5-4 by world No. 100 Duane Jones at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester.
Brecel was never behind in the contest until the final frame, but a modest 66 in the opening frame was his highest break as he was outscored by Welshman Jones, who produced runs of 52, 58, 60, 53 and a closing 66 to reach the last 64.
Two-time world finalist Ali Carter bounced back from his 5-4 defeat to Daniel Wells in his Xi’an Grand Prix qualifier by completing a 5-3 win over Wang Yuchen, boosted by breaks of 57, 135, 82 and 64.
Carter reached the final of last year’s Wuhan Open before losing 10-7 to Judd Trump, who begins his title defence in China against Antoni Kowalski.
But 2015 world champion and recent Crucible semi-finalist Stuart Bingham suffered a 5-1 loss to Xing Zihao.
Qualifying continues until Tuesday with the final stage of the event being held between October 6-12 in Wuhan, live on Eurosport and discovery+.
