Ange Postecoglou is still waiting for his first win as Nottingham Forest manager after replacing Nuno Espirito Santo

Nottingham Forest head coach Ange Postecoglou has responded after being subjected to ‘sacked in the morning’ chants by his own supporters. The 60-year-old’s miserable start to life in the City Ground hotseat reached a new low after sections of the home crowd turned against the former Tottenham Hotspur boss.

Forest’s wait for a win in Europe was extended as Danish minnows FC Midtjylland ran out 3-2 winners over the Premier League club. It was when Valdemar Byskov added the third to make it 3-1 that the anger was directed towards the head coach, who only succeeded Nuno Espirito Santo on September 9.

Since taking over, it is now six games without a win and they could slip into the relegation zone going into the October international break, should results go against them and they lose away at Newcastle United.

Postecoglou was understandably downbeat in his post-match interview with TNT Sports and was blunt in his reaction to the chants from the home crowd.

“I heard it. They’re fans and they’re entitled to their opinion,” said Postecoglou, addressing the chants.

“Nothing surprises me in football anymore. We’ve got to keep going, there’s no hiding in the sport we’re in, we’ve got to keep our heads up and we’ve got a game against Newcastle, we have to make sure we are up for that.”

He added: “I don’t think I’ve seen anything (that) they’re not on board or trying to implement. If we’re not dealing with these key moments which we haven’t been in games, we’re not going to win the games we’re going to win.

“Really disappointing, really, really poor goals we conceded in the first-half and allowed the opposition to get comfortable into the game. It’s been the story of our last few games, key moments let ourselves down.

“We let ourselves down in key moments in games, we knew the threats they provided, it wasn’t organisationally, it was those moments we haven’t shown the same desire and determination as the opposition.

“We allow refereeing decisions to decide the outcome but it shouldn’t even get to that.

“We should’ve handed the situation better. Progress is us winning games of football, we haven’t done that, football has been compelling at times. But you’ve got to win games of football and that’s what we’ve got to do.”

Forest fell behind to Ousmane Diao’s first goal of the season after 18 minutes before summer signing Dan Ndoye levelled four minutes later.

Parity, however, was shortlived as Mads Bech restored the visitors’ lead just two minutes later. Byskov added a third two minutes from time as Chris Wood’s stoppage-time penalty wasn’t enough to inspire a late fightback.
