Andy Robertson makes emotional Liverpool contract admission ahead of uncertain summer

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has insisted he is still good enough to play for the club as he vowed to fight for his Anfield future.

The Scotland international has endured a mixed season under new manager Arne Slot, whose tactics have offered Robertson fewer opportunities to flex the attacking prowess seen regularly under former boss Jurgen Klopp.

With a handful of poor performances only ramping up the pressure on Robertson, who argued he was being made a “scapegoat”, Liverpool are expected to be in the market for a new left-back this summer and have been tipped to spend heavily on Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, valued at over £40m.

A defiant Robertson has previously voiced a desire to prove his doubters wrong and, speaking at a charity lunch alongside Jamie Carragher, he made it clear he has no desire to walk away from Anfield this summer.

“I have only got a year left [on my contract,” Robertson said. “So I hope all you [fans] can help me with making the same noise around a new contract as you did with Mo [Salah] and Virgil [van Dijk]’s! Maybe you [Carragher] can stop linking the club with other left-backs as well!

“No look, I’ve had eight wonderful years so far and I have a year left. I am not as young as I once was but I love this club and I have had some great memories here, so let’s see what the future holds.

“I still believe I can still produce good performances and some really good performances and I think I have done that this season, so I still think I can produce at the top level and if I can do that then that is where I belong and hopefully I can stay here for many years to come.”

Robertson acknowledged that Liverpool are in a “new era” under Slot, with the two full-back spots likely to be the strongest evidence of that.

While Robertson is facing a battle to avoid being replaced, Liverpool are braced for the departure of right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is expected to complete a free transfer to Real Madrid this summer.

Signing a replacement for Alexander-Arnold is not seen as a priority, however, with Conor Bradley expected to step up as the team’s starter as Liverpool focus their efforts on bolstering in other positions, including left-back.
