There is little over a day left in the transfer window and Alexader Isak’s chance at a move to Liverpool is not yet dead. The Newcastle United forward could yet find some help from Magpies target Yoane Wissa after the Brentford star released an extraordinary statement.

Wissa has been keen on a move to St James’ Park all summer but Brentford have rejected Newcastle’s advances thus far. And with the penultimate day of the summer window upon us, the DR Congo international has made his final push and claimed the Bees are ‘unduly standing in my way despite a series of fair offers throughout the summer’.

The forward claims that keeping him in west London would ‘tarnish four wonderful years at this incredible club’. Wissa has yet to feature for Brentford this season with his future unresolved.

For their part, Newcastle have broken their transfer record to sign Nick Woltemade to reinforce their frontline. It has been said that the Magpies wanted to see two strikers come through their doors before even considering an exit for Isak however, after waving goodbye to Callum Wilson at the end of his contract.

So, if Wissa’s actions are successful in prompting a move, Isak may yet find himself on the way to Anfield. Newcastle have hoped to gain £150million for his signature having rejected an offer rising to £120m already.

Isak released a statement of his own earlier this month and was roundly criticised for his actions. The Swede has not trained with Eddie Howe’s side since not travelling on the squad’s pre-season tour of Asia.

Newcastle’s boss admitted his side were still active in the transfer market but had no update on Isak. “On Alex’s situation I have no communication and no update, we are still actively looking to recruit but I don’t know if that has any relation to Alex’s situation.”

“I’m not party to any talks going on,” he told Sky Sports. “I have been preparing for this game which is demanding enough. I will find out like everyone else. We can’t wait for the finish line because we need clarity to move forward.”

It has been suggested Isak is still hopeful of earning a move in the next 24 hours or so, though reports claim Liverpool will not bid higher than £120m. If Newcastle can get another deal overe the line, the door would appear to be open however, and the funds earned through Isak’s sale would help any bid of their own.

Wissa, 28, has just one-year remaining on his contract. The forward will hope his latest actions force Brentford’s hand.

Read Wissa’s full statement below:

“I have stayed silent for much of the summer, but with just hours remaining of the transfer window I feel compelled make it clear that I want to leave Brentford,” Wissa wrote. “I believe the club are unduly standing in my way despite a series of fair offers throughout the summer.

“Earlier this summer, I held open discussions with the club’s senior management, including key directors and the new head coach. I made clear my intention to explore a new challenge.

“During these conversations, it was confirmed to me and my representatives that the club would not stand in my way if a reasonable offer was received. This was also put in writing. Based on this understanding, I sought to find a new club, keeping Brentford informed with full transparency at every step.

“I received a formal offer from another Premier League club and communicated I wanted to join. I was under the impression, from all my conversations with Brentford, that there was a mutual agreement to part ways.

“Yet as the window comes to an end, the club has now significantly changed its position, going against what was communicated. This has left me in a difficult and frustrating position. The promise that I could leave this summer has not been fulfilled. It saddens me to have to write that, and I maintain total respect for the club and its fans.

“I want to make it clear that I have not acted unprofessionally, nor do I wish to leave Brentford on bad terms. I have been transparent in my position throughout. I have continued to communicate openly with the club and conduct myself in a way that reflects my values as both a footballer and a human being.

“I remain hopeful that a fair and reasonable resolution can still be found before the transfer window shuts. In the meantime, I must do what I feel is right for my career and family and insist that Brentford honour their promise to let me join a new club and at a fair price.

“Being made to stay beyond this summer will only tarnish four wonderful years at this incredible club and so I ask Brentford’s owners and directors to now honour their promise to let me leave in the final hours of the window.”
