The ADHD pill pop is at an all-time high in Finland – and some experts are wondering if it’s time to hit the brakes.

Figures from the Social Insurance Institution (Kela) reveal a staggering rise in prescriptions for ADHD medication, with usage nearly tripling in just five years.

More than 115,000 people received compensation for ADHD meds in 2024 – an eye-watering €27 million worth of stimulant-based treatments, marking a 20% jump from the previous year.

ADHD and other attention deficit disorders are being diagnosed more often these days, and this can be seen in the increased number of prescriptions.

But this is nothing new. Another nationwide study revealed that ADHD cases more than doubled between 2015 and 2020, with the sharpest rise seen in teenage girls.

Either awareness is improving, or the condition is being overdiagnosed.

So what’s behind the boom? Experts say better diagnostic tools, greater awareness, and shifting attitudes toward treatment are driving the rise. But with Finland’s ADHD rates now outstripping global estimates, the big question remains – are we facing a real crisis, or are we just slapping the ADHD label on too many people?

Big Pharma boom: €4.1 billion worth of meds sold

It’s not just ADHD meds flying off pharmacy shelves – Finland’s total pharmaceutical bill hit a jaw-dropping €4.1 billion in 2024, up 5% from the previous year.

Of that sum, €2.6 billion was covered by health insurance, with Kela footing the bill for €1.9 billion in reimbursements.

And while more than a third of the payouts went towards cancer and immune-response drugs, the rapid growth of ADHD prescriptions has fuelled fierce debate.

Overdiagnosis or overdue attention?

As ADHD medication becomes the norm, some experts are raising serious concerns over whether we’re medicating too many people.

With diagnoses surging and new, pricier drugs entering the market, are we too quick to reach for the prescription pad? Or is this just doctors finally giving ADHD the attention it deserves?
