'A dream story' – O'Sullivan restates desire to win record eighth world title

Ronnie O’Sullivan has used his latest trip to China to again restate his hopes of claiming an outright record eighth world title before he hangs up his cue.

The seven-time Crucible winner feels it would be the perfect end to his career in the sport if he can win more one world title after claiming the sport’s greatest prize in 2001, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2020 and 2022.

O’Sullivan – who faces Iran showman Hossein Vafaei in the last 16 of the Xi’an Grand Prix on Thursday afternoon (12:30pm BST) – is tied on seven with 1990s icon Stephen Hendry, but would love to set a new benchmark for the modern era.

“Over the last two years, I have won a lot of tournaments, but not really enjoyed it,” said the record 41-time ranking event winner. “I don’t have to win any more, I have had an amazing career.

“If there is one thing I would love to do, it’s to win another World Championship. That would be eight, and then I would have every record there is.

“I’m tied on seven with Stephen Hendry which is still a great achievement, but it would be nice to have them all, that would be a dream story, to be able to look back on my career when it’s over.”

The world No. 5 made similar remarks during the World Open in Yushan in March. “I’d love to try to win the Crucible,” he said. “It is a hard tournament and 17 days is a long time. A lot can happen there.

“I’d love to win that another time to make it eight. There are so many good players around, so you have to get a little bit of luck and play some good snooker at the right times.”
