Arctic conditions prompt a rare shift to the Capitol Rotunda
Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony on Monday will take place inside the Capitol Rotunda instead of the traditional outdoor steps of Congress, as freezing temperatures grip Washington, D.C. The decision, announced on Friday via Trump’s Truth Social account, marks a historic change for the event.
Arctic temperatures prompt rare inauguration relocation
With temperatures expected to drop as low as -5°C, Trump cited safety and historical precedent as the reasons for moving the ceremony indoors. “An Arctic wind is sweeping the country,” Trump posted. “For everyone’s safety, I will deliver my inaugural address in the Capitol Rotunda, just as Reagan did in 1985.”
The ceremony, despite its relocation, is expected to draw over 200,000 attendees eager to witness the beginning of Trump’s new term.
Trump inauguration festivities shift indoors for safety
After the indoor inauguration, Trump will join supporters at the Capital One Arena, a large indoor venue that will also host the inaugural parade. This change ensures the day’s festivities can go ahead without subjecting attendees to the harsh winter conditions.
The decision has also sparked comparisons to the infamous 1841 inauguration of President William Henry Harrison, who gave a lengthy speech in freezing rain. His exposure reportedly led to pneumonia and his death a month later—a reminder of the risks of outdoor ceremonies in winter.
Inauguration day: Weather and history converge
Trump’s decision to adapt the inauguration to the freezing weather highlights the balance between tradition and practicality. While rare, such adjustments ensure that the significance of the event remains intact while prioritising safety.
For attendees, the move indoors provides an opportunity to witness history in a more intimate setting, offering a unique start to Trump’s presidency amid some of the coldest conditions in recent memory.
