7 cut-price players for Premier League clubs to target in January

The January transfer market is notoriously difficult to master. Even the most well-respected recruitment teams struggle to traverse the minefield.

The winter market generally centres around desperation, clubs eager to remedy the issues that have arisen during the first half of the campaign. With teams loathed to lose their best and brightest midway through the season, valuations often skyrocket.

However, there is still plenty of value to be unearthed during the January window, with wantaway stars up for sale and players entering the final six months of their contracts.

Here are the cut-price deals that Premier League sides could target in January 2025.

Jonathan David

Suitable clubs: Arsenal, Man Utd, Tottenham
Potential fee: £15-20m

Only Robert Lewandowski, Harry Kane and Erling Haaland plundered more goals than Jonathan David in 2024. The Canada international produced 36 in 50 appearances across the calendar year – a sensational return given he was turning out for Lille.

David has naturally attracted interest from Europe’s elite clubs and the expiration of his current contract this summer means he’s available to discuss his future with other clubs this winter.

While the temptation will be to wait until the end of the season and sign the 24-year-old for free, splashing the cash in January could guarantee the centre-forward’s signature.

Suitable clubs: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd
Potential fee: £20-25m

Speaking of Canadian internationals whose contracts expire this summer, enter Alphonso Davies. While Bayern Munich are desperate to tie the left-back to new terms, there is a growing feeling that this could be the 24-year-old’s final campaign in Bavaria.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are expressing significant interest in Davies, especially the former, but the Premier League could prove an equally desirable destination for the defender.

Similarly to David, the Bayern man will be available for free come the summer, but putting £20-25m down in January could force a move. There are several Premier League sides crying out for left-back reinforcements.

Dani Olmo

Suitable clubs: Arsenal, Man City
Potential fee: Loan deal

Barcelona’s ongoing battle to register summer signing Dani Olmo – which is still not resolved despite Spain’s national sports council ruling in favour – leaves the Spaniard’s future up in the air.

Having dazzled since his £51m move to Catalonia, it appears unlikely that the Euro 2024 winner would leave the club on a permanent deal, but a loan could be sanctioned for the second half of the campaign should Barca’s push to register Olmo fail.

There are a number of Premier League sides who would relish the addition of the extremely talented Olmo for the final months of the campaign, especially the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City who have lacked creativity over long periods this season.

Randal Kolo Muani

Suitable clubs: Man Utd, Tottenham, West Ham
Potential fee: Loan deal

Randal Kolo Muani has swiftly fallen out of favour at Paris Saint-Germain under Luis Enrique and now looks a far cry from the imposing and speedy centre-forward who ran riot with Eintracht Frankfurt. He has scored just twice in 14 appearances for the Ligue 1 champions this season.

An exit in January looks increasingly likely and both Manchester United and Tottenham have expressed interest in signing the France international on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Juventus are also exploring a move but the allure of the Premier League may prove too tempting for Kolo Muani, who could rebuild his career with one of England’s elite.

Potential clubs: Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd
Potential fee: £12.5m

With his contract also expiring this summer, Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly willing to let Jonathan Tah, one of the key performers during their remarkable 2023/24 campaign, leave the BayArena for as little as £12.5m during January. Now that’s a bargain.

The towering centre-half may turn 29 this February, but he is in his peak years and was ever so close to joining Bayern Munich over the summer. Barcelona have reportedly expressed interest, too.

Chelsea, Man City and Man Utd are among the Premier League sides currently searching for central defensive cover and £12.5m is a snip for a player of Tah’s immense quality and consistency.

Douglas Luiz

Suitable clubs: Aston Villa, Man Utd, Man City, Nottingham Forest
Potential fee: £21m

Douglas Luiz earned his lucrative move to Juventus following several impressive seasons at Aston Villa. However, after just six months in Turin, an exit could already be on the cards for the Brazilian midfielder.

With Juventus reportedly looking to recoup the £21m they spent over the summer – with several players heading to Villa Park as part of the deal – Luiz could be available for a bargain fee.

A return to Villa would not be out of the question, while Man City, who Luiz represented early in his career, could see the diminutive defensive midfielder as the perfect Rodri replacement for the second half of the campaign.

Marcus Rashford

Suitable clubs: Aston Villa, Tottenham, West Ham
Potential fee: £35m or loan

Marcus Rashford’s public falling out with Man Utd means January may see an Old Trafford exit for the boyhood Red Devil. Europe looks a likely destination, with Italian clubs and Borussia Dortmund reportedly at the front of the queue.

Rashford could be available for as little as £35m, which would prove a steal should he be able to rediscover his strongest form. A loan switch until the end of the campaign remains a distinct possibility, too.

West Ham, who are now managed by Graham Potter, are one of the clubs keen on the 27-year-old, who could prove an astute signing in the right environment.
