Residents jolted awake by powerful tremor – but what’s behind the quake that shook Spain’s south?
It was a wake-up call no one wanted. At around 3.30 AM, the earth rumbled beneath western Andalusia as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake sent shockwaves through 200 municipalities spanning Seville, Huelva, Córdoba, and even Badajoz.
The epicentre? Cazalla de la Sierra, Seville – where locals described the 10-second tremor as ‘a shock.’
What’s behind the quake?
Though the tremor triggered slight panic, experts assure there’s no reason to expect further issues. Spain sits on the Eurasian and African tectonic plates, which are in a constant, slow-motion collision. Occasionally, this pent-up energy releases – and that’s when we feel the earth literally move beneath our feet.
Thankfully, this Andalusian shake-up caused no reported damage or injuries, just a fright for local residents.
Emergency advice – what to do in case of an earthquake
With tremors like this, being prepared is key. Emergency services 112 Andalucía have issued life-saving advice for future quakes:
Stay inside if you’re already indoors – don’t run outside.
Drop, cover, and hold on – get under a sturdy table or doorway.
Avoid windows and heavy objects that could topple over.
If outside, move to an open area away from buildings and power lines.
After the quake, check for damage – but beware of aftershocks.
